I've encountered the same situation before, suz3.
In QuickBooks Online, you'll get this error when the Send later box is checked under the Customer email field. Let's change the preferred delivery method by following these steps:
Here's a sample screenshot for reference:
You can also go to the settings to set the delivery method.
Here's how:
That should fix the error when you save the invoice.

Hi kembertons,
Yes, you can save you invoice without entering an email address. Just be sure you don't select the Save and Send option so you won't be required to enter an email address.
You can always post back here when you have additional questions.
Hi. I don't have this as an option on my screen and it keeps saying add valid email address. I just can't seem to work out how to create a valid invoice without having to send it somewhere. Any tips please?

This seriously does not work - sort it out.
I'm here to help you sort this out, James Hone.
I've got another troubleshooting step to fix this.
Let's open QuickBooks on a private window. This is the best place to identify any browser-related issues.
You can use these keyboard shortcuts to open one:
If you can send an invoice without entering an email address successfully, you can go back to a regular browser and clear its cache. A piled cache can also be the reason for some unexpected page behavior. Otherwise, try another supported browser as an alternative.
I'll be around to help you. Have a great day ahead!
This is not an issue with my internet, this an issue with you're software. IT NEEDS AN EMAIL ADDRESS!
The comment above looks nothing like my quickbooks account in the slightest so ive no idea where all of those screenshots pointing out what to do are from.
Yet again, unhelpful responses.
Just allow people to fill out a invoice WITHOUT AN EMAIL, then add a button to SAVE AS PDF WITHOUT SAVING AS A DRAFT. Its seriously not so hard.
Hi James, this thread and the information provided is relating to QuickBooks Online which uses different software to QuickBooks Self-Employed, which sounds like the version you're using. With QBSE, it is only possible to save the invoice when sending via email, we have passed feedback to the relevant team to explore the option of saving without sending. :folded_hands:
Thanks - Still really not helpful.
You have this solution on a different version but when people are screaming out on here 100 times over for it to be on SelfEmployed. From 4 years ago! it does not happen?!
This is supposed to be profession accounting software yet you cannot put a feature on what I assume being a higher type account. Adding insult to injury, falsely promising people that you would "develop" something you already have for 4 years!
Even worse - giving the same spiel as you did 4 years ago!!
