How do I turn off VAT registration

Thanks for visiting the Community today, Mattysarah.

Let me provide clarifications about managing VAT in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

QuickBooks Self-Employed is a program that helps you manage both personal and business expenses. It also uses a single entry accounting. The option to turn on or off the VAT registration is currently unavailable.

The said feature is available in the online and desktop versions. Once it’s turned on in QuickBooks Online (QBO), you’ll no longer be able to deactivate it.

As a workaround, change the default settings for VAT to No VAT. This way, you’re not prompted to enter a tax code when creating transactions.

Here’s how:

  1. Tap the Gear icon in the upper right to select Accounts and settings under Your Company.
  2. Navigate to the left panel and press the Advanced menu to see more details.
  3. Click the Pencil icon for Accounting to update the setup.
  4. In the Default tax rate selection, press the drop-down and choose No VAT.No VAT.png
  5. Click Save and Done to apply the changes.

I’m adding some articles that tackle VAT settings, VAT codes, and VAT exceptions and reports in QBO:

If you’re using QBSE to manage your transactions, the following link contains resources to get you acclimated to the processes in the program: QBSE self-help articles. The topics include taxes, mileage tracking, account management, bank feeds, and processing your tax returns.

If there’s anything else I can help you with handling your VAT, leave a comment below. I’ll get back to assist further. Wishing you and your business continued success.
