What is Stamp Duty on Cars and Vehicles

Stamp duty on cars is a state tax charged for processing a vehicle’s registration to transfer ownership. It is laid out in the Stamp Duties Act.

Car Stamp Duty Rates

The stamp duty rate you pay will depend on the state where you live and will be registering the vehicle. It is also dependent on the vehicle's value. The majority of state revenue offices operate stamp duty cars on a sliding scale based on value.

Second-Hand Car Stamp Duty

Stamp duty must also be paid on used or second-hand vehicles, the same way it is for new vehicles. Some states offer different rates depending on whether you have purchased a new or used vehicle, however, the majority go solely based on the purchase price. States typically calculate the stamp duty payable by organising value into several categories. The lower the transfer fee or market value of the vehicle, the lower the duty.

If you do not pay your car stamp duty the state will reject the registration. Not only will your vehicle be unregistered, but you will also likely face penalties. If you are caught operating an unregistered vehicle you may face jail time.

How to Calculate Car Stamp Duty

Using Queensland as an example for stamp duty calculator car:

  • For a light vehicle with 7 or more cylinders valued at $47,000, you would need to pay $1,880 in stamp duty.

  • For a light vehicle with an electric or hybrid engine, using the same value, only $940 stamp duty would be due.

If you exceed the luxury car tax threshold, you will also need to factor in an additional 33% of the value above the threshold.

Car Stamp Duty Refunds

If you pay stamp duty to register or transfer the vehicle you can apply for a refund if you meet your state's eligibility criteria. You will need to consult your state's guidelines. You may also be able to apply for a refund if you return the vehicle to the dealership where you purchased it within three months.
