Quickbooks refuses to accept my paypal CSV file is good

thank you finance71 !!!

changing the extension to lowercase, completely solved the Paypal import problem for me. No need to change anything inside the file. I also tested this with extension .CSv, and it failed.

So the code for Quickbooks' CSV import code, is requiring strict lowercase when it checks the extension. This would be a simple fix for the code team to resolve, by allowing uppercase or lowercase on the extension. They really should implement this upper/lowercase extension flexibility, because their website describes the filetypes in all caps, right on the upload page. This implies that caps are how Quickbooks refers to the file extensions, which adds to the confusion.

This -should- be an incredibly easy fix for the code. You have to specifically tell the website code which extensions are acceptable. Just duplicate the list of acceptable extensions, in caps. If they want to be fancy, they could apply a string check to extract the extension after the ".", and force it to be lowercase or uppercase. But it's not even necessary because you're only dealing with 5 acceptable extensions.

Thank you. I had the same issue for hours this morning trying to figure it out. I couldn't get the all lower .CSV with the title because of MS. Excel 2019, i think. But what worked for me was that i saved it into excel 97-2003 format  first and then saved it as CSV, i got the all lower .csv file.  Thanks again.

Confirmed that changing the .CSV file extension to lowercase fixes the problem.

Wow, I just found (after 3 hours of troubleshooting and following the endless suggestions of formatting from the quickbooks support team) that the issue was that the extension of my file was .CSV instead of .csv  It is beyond me too that not one of the support people knew anything about it.  Thanks so much for posting this fix.

Hi, so to fix the problem do I just need to add underscores where there are spaces in the descriptions??

Sorry just got to the end of the feed. Thanks for all the info anyway. Cx

Nope. To fix the problem, change the file extension from .CSV, to .csv (make the letters lowercase).

I don't think I've had a problem with blank spaces. The biggest problem is that the import software is case-sensitive, and thinks .CSV is a different filetype from .csv

I dinked around with every solution on this thread to try and get my CSV file accepted...  I just can't even wrap my head around the fact that it was being rejected with a generic error message because it was CSV instead of csv.  LEAST ROBUST TOOL EVER!  With a minimal amount of programming effort, this tool could be a lot more useful.

Thank you finance71 for the solution (and to the original poster of this thread for saving me from wasting my time with a lot of failed solutions)

Hello cominghotproductions,

Welcome to the Community page,

what is the issue you are having in regards to your CSV file?

Are you getting any errors or anything when you try and upload it into your account?

If you are having the same problem that I had you need to change the extension of your file from .CSV (upper case) to .csv (lower case).  This is what fixed it for me.

Try changing the file extension to lowercase. Paypal by default exports .CSV, quickbooks only accepts .csv

Delete CSV and replace with csv

Quickbooks support used to be great. As anyone reading this thread can see... they now.. are not.

OMG Thank you so much!

lowercase .csv in file name instead of uppercase .CSV in the file name fixed my similar problem.  And I was uploading a csv file created by QUICKBOOKS desktop (.CSV, when I manually renamed to .csv it worked fine)  Their own software causes this problem and they have no clue that it exists.

After 4 months of headache and well over 40hrs invested, I stumbled upon the simple (maddeningly simple) solution:

- IF YOUR CSV FILE ENDS IN ALL CAPS, LOWER THEM TO LOWERCASE. (i.e. "paypal-export.CSV" will not work; "paypal-export.csv" will)

Why not a single support agent or QA tester could locate this solution is beyond me.

ok I swear I am pretty computer smart. But I'm also blonde lol. How do I manually make CSV lowercase? I've tried re-saving as a new file type but it's still uppercase.

I just typed the .csv as lower case when resaving. You may have to alter the original name a little bit in order to avoid the auto-population of the file name.

That's the problem. It only let's me change the file name. It doesn't let me edit the.CVS portion.

Don't let excel do the .csv, just type in .csv and save it.

ok! I'll try that! And just to confirm, which report is best to use from PayPal? They have so many options.

Activity / All Reports / Statements / .csv file is my go-to for PayPal reports.

Ok that worked perfectly! But one more question... when it asks to select the amount column... which one do I select? Gross or Net? I'm assuming I do Gross and then I do a lump sum PayPal Fees recording for each month?

That's personal preference, but the way that you described is a solid way to go about it. Good luck!
