The tutorials show there to be an account type Accounts Receivable (A/R) and Detail Type Accounts Receivable (A/R) and similarly for Accounts Payable.
These do not exist in the drop down lists in the chart of accounts.
Can someone please explain.

Hi JohnMike, your default accounts may instead appear in your Chart of Accounts as Creditors (for accounts payable) and Debtors (for accounts receivable). :)

Ok so I checked out this following a very confused online chat as far as I can tell the only detail type for debtor is debtor and the only detail type for creditor is creditor.
Does this mean the the detailed tutorial video on accounts payable is just total rubbish and done of this functionality actually exists on the current version of quickbooks

Hi JohnMike, the term accounts payable and debtors are used interchangeably based on different versions of QuickBooks; both refer to money owed to the business, so you can still follow the online guidance for these.
So this cut and paste is direct from the qb search tutorial accounts receivable:
To organise your books, the general recommendation is to maintain one Accounts Receivable (A/R) account and one Accounts Payable (A/P) account.
Your default and only A/R and A/P accounts are the ones that were created when you set up your company in QuickBooks Online, or those you selected during conversion.
However, if you have to group or divide your open payables or receivables, you can do one of the following:
The steps in the following sections guide you through setting up either method.
Tip If you already have multiple Accounts Receivable or Accounts Payable accounts, consider merging them. |
One way to group your open receivables is to set up a parent customer for each receivable type you need, and then change your existing customers to sub-customers of the appropriate parent. This allows you to group and sub-total your open receivables by the parent customer.
To be able to group your open receivables by the parent customer, you must create a parent customer for every Accounts Receivable type you need.
To create parent customers:
Repeat these steps for every Accounts Receivable type you need.
Next, you need to identify which customers are sub-customers of the parent you created.
You can now group and sub-total your open receivables and filter customer reports by the associated parent accounts.
Locations are automatically reported on the default Customer Balance Detail and Supplier Balance Detail Reports.
To use location tracking to group payables or receivables, you must have turned on location tracking on the Advanced tab of the Account and Settings page. You can then select the Location item on the All Lists screen to set up different locations to use. (For more information about location tracking, see Set up and use location tracking.)
Once you have turned on and set up locations, you can run your report to make sure that all transactions are assigned to a location associated with an Accounts Receivable or Accounts Payable type, and then customise it to report one location at a time.
You must run a separate report for each location, as you cannot run one report and sort it by location.
To run and customise the report:
The total of all of the reports will equal the total Accounts Receivable or Accounts Payable.
The problem is that NONE OF THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THERE IS NOT AN ACCOUNT TYPE ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE OR ACCOUNTS PAYABLE.
Please can someone explain.
Hi JohnMike, you don't need to use these specific account names - where you see accounts receivable you would use debtors, and where your see accounts payable you would use creditors. Do you see a debtors and creditors account in your Chart of Account?
Yes I am with it now. There is no specific Accounts Receivable account type or detail type.
What intuit need to do is:
A. Update the written tutorial found by searching "Accounts Receivable" after clicking on help.
B. Remove out of date youtube tutorials by intuit which specifically state that you use the Accounts Receivable (A/R) account type.
Ditto for Accounts payable.
Thanks for joining the thread, JohnMike.
