What actually happens after 31st January 2023 to my QuickBooks Desktop product?

just a quick headsup on our situation.

our QBDT was installed in a virtual machine.

Since installing it has not been updated,

A while ago I disconnected the VM from the internet by disallowing internet access at the router - so that it still has access to our network and network files but was completely isolated from the outside world.

I also some months ago tried setting the system date in the VM to April 2024 and all still worked.

QB in this VM is still running.

As a trial a month or so ago I created a clone of the QB VM with a copy of the company file.

This morning 1st July I started that cloned VM up and started QB without any problems.

In our case we've moved across to Xero because we need bank feeds that didn't work with QB and MTD capabilities.

But we still have access to all our QB data going back to before 2005

The reason for using a clone for testing was in case Intuit had installed a disabler in an update or if via the internet there was a mechanism to have triggered a disabler in the software which would keep our actual install safe.

So as I suggested in an earlier post and as skinnerneil has also said, if

  • you don't need any updates
  • you isolate QBDT completely from the internet

there is no reason why you cannot continue to use QBDT - as far is presently known

good luck everybody

@Jovychris_A

So is this what's in store for us in the US???  15 month notice to switch over to QBO?  So those of us who went to QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2023 can not go back to QBDT 2020 or 2021?  Lets be clear, we want to know if this is what you have planned for the US?

What actually happens after 31st January 2023 to my QuickBooks Desktop product?

I have spent the last 15 months moving clients to where they "chose" to go - kicking and screaming - training them on their new software had holding drying their tears etc. Then I extracted Excel reports for all of their data in one case going back to 1998. This ensures that any historic question they may have can be answered. I don't feel self satisfied, just utterly exhausted.

Thinking that once all of my clients still on Desktop Year End 31.03.23 transfer was completed in record time I could get some sort of personal life back only to discover that there was a very silent launch of QuickBooks Online Advanced.

For any needing stock control, time sheets without payroll and projects. Customer sub accounts and most of the desktop functions it is there and appears to work. Unlike Sage you can adapt it, delete errors and get used to it relatively quickly.

I've just spent 3 months moving a client from QBD to Sage and then to QBO Advanced. Most of my clients would have willingly gone to this had they been informed by Intuit that it was coming. Instead they moved in April 2022 as the original cessation was to be half way through their financial year end. The extension shattered them, they could have had another year, the arrival of Advanced has left them all frankly Gob Smacked. That's the most polite way I can put it. None that moved in 2022 will even consider ever returning to QuickBooks.

I've noticed the USA threads. They shouldn't be too concerned, the UK's issue is a direct result of HMRC (our government) and Making Tax Digital for quarterly tax submissions.

Software providers are finding it easier to comply with HMRC's requirements with software that is connected to the internet with your data on their servers. The ultimate aim is for HMRC to access bank accounts and your bank feeds will facilitate that.

That is why Desktop has been ditched. I suspect the deadlines for cessation were a result of HMRC's deadlines. Intuit were simply not prepared to comply. The sad fact is that many of us would have accepted a price increase to keep it. We were paying less with monthly subscriptions than when we were purchasing an annual disc years ago, add inflation and we could have been paying £50-60 per month without noticing. Add an explanation about HMRC requirements and £75 would have still be very competitive. Sage for the like for like product is £165 so Intuit take that for what it is, you've lost credibility for your lack of foresight.

Sometimes decisions made by others don't make sense, when it comes to technology no decision makes sense. Know why? They are made by the young who are looking purely at the tech not the experienced who understand that they need to be looking at what use it is to the user. QBD was developed and launched in 1998, have a look at Wikipedia, the developer retires and look what happens to his product.

RIP QuickBooks Desktop, you were the best on the market for 25 years, don't think Online will be able to claim that in 25 years time.

Hello Ell281, thanks for taking time to leave such insightful feedback. Thank you for your loyalty over the years. We appreciate this has not been ideal and has impacted you and your clients to a high extent. The decision was not taken lightly but compliance with HMRC as an accounting package is key. We do take on board your points and we'll pass on your comments to the relevant team.

At Emmam6... You are very out of date in your understanding of UK regulations I am afraid. There are a actually no concluded changes to UK tax regulations applying anymore. They were all but shelved completely over 6 months ago by the Government. Intuit of course jumped on the early bandwagon to justify culling their product range and, instead of delaying when the Goverment's MTD plan was deferred for several years, Intuit, for no justifiable reason, maintained their June 2023 cliff edge (despite inadequate development time being given to QBO). The regulations you speak of will not now apply until April 2026 (3 years time!). It will also not apply to those with profits of less than £50K.... your target market for QBO I would say! Whoops you just ruined your reputation for nothing (and totally ruined the last 2 months of my life doing migrations too).

At any rate for Intuit to say their developers are not clever enough to do a simply quarterly submission from QBD is very sad... they manage it for a VAT return... I wonder what can be so very different!

None of these complaints would exist though if Intuit had bothered to listen to us about how rubbish QBO is compared to QBD..... I did some work on a newly migrated QBO file this morning and it brought to light all the things it can't do, cant do well or simply how much slower it is to work on. Its awful! And I have been using it for several years and am certified so know my way around it. You should have delayed for 3 years and put some proper development time into QBO. Just get it to mirror QBD and 90% of our complaints would disappear!

What actually happens after 31st January 2023 to my QuickBooks Desktop product?

Well Buzz21 I am assuming that although you have referred to Ell271 your are actually responding to me.

I wouldn't be concerned about my reputation and I'm not even sure why personal comments are necessary in this thread.

I am correct in my comments re HMRC. Intuit were not prepared to comply, this was before HMRC delayed MTD for tax by six months and then again when they delayed until 2026. If you had been reading my posts you would have seen my request for Intuit to also delay the cessation until 2026 as soon as that announcement was made.

Many QuickBooks Desktop users including several of my clients do indeed have profits well over £50k PA hence the fact that their businesses were not suitable for QBO. However QBO Advanced does appear to cater for the larger SMES as per my earlier post.

Enjoy your day, I am, I'm with a client who has had a good laugh reading these while we had a break from training her for her new software.

Hi ell281.... sorry.... I did incorrectly state your name in my first post (even got that wrong though) but have now corrected it to the Intuit member... sorry.. i wasnt replying to you or making any knocks against your reputation... you are in the same painful boat as me! I had a right fight getting the website to accept my correction and spent ages trying... I think it has done it now! In my defence I have had very little sleep due to working all hours on migrations, training and then in the last week trying to catch up on work... thank you Intuit!

I'm glad you are sharing the posts with your clients too! Mine appreciate the noise we've been trying to make with Intuit over this.

@ell281 Thank you for your explanation of what occurred in the UK.  We are suspicious still here in the US since Intuit made it next to impossible to stay on QuickBools Desktop, not making it readily available through their website, but pushing the Quickbooks Online which is horrible!  We were getting used  to the sun setting of the programs after three years, but no explanation was offered when we could not longer purchase via a retailer.  And those that were lured into going to QBO are frustrated as its been an absolute nightmare for most, along with the price increases and annual payroll fees, and only one choice, forced online- subscription.  Some are seeking alternatives, but its clear that intuit doesn't appear to put their customers first.  @Awsum87

I've just learnt that there is a Desktop app (for Windows and Mac) of QBO that permits a Desktop-like view, could be useful for some (no additional functions, but maybe a more familiar view for some):

I honestly despair at Intuit communications and their marketing department. They quietly launched Advanced a few month ago and now without much fan fare launch this desktop app. Now if they made it available to the vast majority of users on the next tier down instead of trying rip all us UK users off after causing all the heart ache and tears over the last 18 months. That would go some way at healing the mess they have created. But, as per usual it will fall on deaf ears.

I agree, Advanced is the answer for most of my clients but all but one had already moved.

Intuit clearly don't understand that with an established business with, in some cases 25 plus years of trading, it takes months to transfer software.

First decisions about what to go with, trial a few before final decision. Decide what processes need to be kept, then how they will fit in with the new software. Then the training and inputting the items, services, stock. Setting up the chart of accounts to fit the business and satisfy accountants. Then input outstanding debtors and creditors. No matter how they try and convince us - not just Intuit, others will also tell you anything in order to sign you up! - conversions do not fully work. Going from one software platform to another is like putting a square peg into a round hole, it does not fit. Lastly the chore of extracting what you know you're going to need. Copy invoices, particularly those unpaid, reports for anything and everything, just in case.

Once software providers understand this we will get a better service, until then, they think they are selling a product in their eyes not much different to a tin of beans. It's left to their support staff to pick up the pieces and pacify us who have done their best and appear to be as mystified as the rest of us.

Launching what appears to be a ground breaking online product that already almost does all that Desktop Pro & Accountant did in such a secretive way is weird. There is no other way to describe it. It's the answer to my client's prayers, I am just thankful they were with me when we did a final research at the end of March when it wasn't on the screen otherwise they would have thought I was a complete idiot for missing it. I only found it by chance, this poor client had gone to Sage and has now spent the last 3 months moving again. The others had moved 2022 as the first cessation notice did not fit in with their year ends. When it was extended they had already moved.

I was talking to the support team earlier and it turns out the Desktop app is no longer supported as it hasn't been updated in a while!

Apparently, not to be used, full of glitches.

Hilarious.

I told them to

a. Not put it in the QBO onboarding emails, suggesting it especially helpful for Desktop users

b. Update the webpage that details the App

c. Take it out of the QBO menu!

(Just to be clear I clarified that they did not mean QB Desktop but the new-to-us Desktop Online App).
