CIS monthly return incorrect

Hi, is anyone else experiencing rounding discrepancies when submitting their monthly CIS returns? The report totals showing within Quickbooks don't match up with what's being reported to HMRC. Last month it was a discrepancy of 5p, and this month 4p. I know this is only pennies, but I expect much more accuracy than this with my accounting platform. :\

I've checked our records and haven't seen any similar record same as yours, @jt-sps.

Since Community is a public forum, we're unable to check whats the cause of the rounding discrepancy when submitting CIS returns.

I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They have tools such as screen-sharing (remote access) that can pull up your account in a secure environment and check this odd behavior. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps to fix this for you.

Here's how to reach them:

  1.  Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Click the Help icon in the upper right of the screen.
  3. Select Contact US on the pop-up.
  4. Enter what you're needing assistance with in the How can we help? field and choose Continue
  5. Once done, select the Start a chat or Get a callback option.

For more details about CIS, check out these articles:

I'm adding these payroll hubs that provide articles that can guide you in managing accounts in QuickBooks. Just click the version your using:

Please let me know how the call goes or if you have any other concerns. I want to make sure everything is taken care of.  Take good care.

Hi Joesem,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’ve already tried that last month. You confirmed that there was a problem and you took some details but I wasn’t offered any form of follow up or timeframe of when the issue would be resolved. I was given an internal issue number ([removed]) but advised that there was no way I would be able to check up on it’s progress... or even if it might be fixed. I was hoping when I’d come to do this months return that you might have fixed the problem, but unfortunately not.

Don’t know if you can see the number which got removed from my reply... If not, please look at my account - it should hopefully be logged there. :)

Hi,

Just thought I'd provide an update to other users who might have found this when trying to find more details on this bug.

There is a confirmed general issue which the Quickbooks development team are aware of and working to fix. I've been advised that a fix is scheduled for release in mid-January.

I suspect this issue is only occurring when dealing with sums that can't be split into 20% or 30% without any fractions of pennies, so perhaps most people aren't encountering this bug.

I'll update again in mid-January when I come to submit December's return!

Yes, this has happened to me as well on two of the first three returns I've submitted via QBOnline!   21p first month, nothing second month, then 27p short in the third month.  Why is this happening??

Thanks for the update (sorry didn't read it before posting my reply to your original question).

I'd be very interested to know whether QB are actively working on this now.

Hi @Oil234! I got an email from QB support a couple of weeks back that it has been fixed. This was before I submitted our current CIS return, so I crossed my fingers and submitted it!

I've just checked on HMRC's portal, and I'm pleased to report that this month's return matches what's showing with HMRC. That said.... I've just noticed that this return was uncharacteristically full of whole £, so no opportunities for rounding errors to occur. I will check again on the next month's return. Hopefully will have some pennies this time to properly test the rounding issue is fixed.

The majority of the time, CIS of 20% or 30% results in no fractional pennies which is why I suspect they didn't notice this when testing the new feature (and probably why your 2nd month was spot on @Oil234). It's only when you start trying to deduct CIS on amounts that don't have whole round £ that these differences start to sneak in.

...or at least that's how I understand the problem came about!

When did you submit the latest return @Oil234? I was advised by QB on 14 January that the issue was fixed... so presumably anything submitted before that could still suffer from this bug.

Hi jt-sps

I filed my return on 7 January, so if QB did fix the issue on 14 January that would explain why I still had an error for this month.

However, sorry to put a spanner in the works, but all my payments are always round £ amounts, so the theory of the differences occurring due to rounding errors on pence doesn't hold for my case I'm afraid ...

As you say, let's see what happens next month!

Yikes - perhaps it was a more hideous problem then under the hood Smiley LOL

Hopefully that means it is all fixed now then as mine matched up this month.

Let's test it for the next months! #FingersCrossed
