I have 10 returns that are overdue and have been estimated by HMRC. I need to submit returns but I can't see them in QuickBooks. Only the current open return is displayed. Thanks

Let me guide you on locating your overdue VAT returns, then submit these returns through QuickBooks Online (QBO), @mike510.

We can have the option to adjust the effective dates of these overdue returns by clicking the Prepare Return on your current return displayed:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Go to the Taxes tab.
  3. In the Returns section, click on the Prepare Return in displayed Open Return.
  4. Adjust the effective dates and the Submission Date for these overdue returns.

I've attached screenshots for your reference:

Once you're ready, let's submit your overdue VAT returns.

Moreover, let's record your VAT payments in QBO so that your books balance at the end of each tax year.

Feel free to return if you need further assistance submitting overdue VAT returns. I'm always here to help.

Hi thanks for your help the option to adjust dates as per your screenshot is not there. When I proceed to prepare the dates are fixed with the dates for the current period with no option to edit.

Thanks for your prompt reply, @mike510. Let me guide you with editing the submission date in your VAT return.

To adjust the date, we can hover the cursor to the Submission date box and submit your overdue VAT returns.

In your case, since you don't have the option to edit the date, I recommend doing the steps my colleague provided in a private window. The incognito will prevent your history from being saved.

You can refer to these shortcut keys to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Firefox: Ctrl Shift + P
  • Safari: Command Shift N

Once loaded successfully, switch to your regular browser and clear its cache. By doing this, you can access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can alternatively use a different supported one.

When everything's fine, you might want to check this article and learn how to adjust your VAT liability using QuickBooks Online (QBO): Make VAT adjustments in QBO.

I'd be delighted to help you further if you need additional assistance managing your VAT returns in QBO. Have a great day ahead!

Good evening thank you for the reply going incognito did not solve the problem. However I have established while disconnecting from MTD. It does allow me to edit The VAT return however this only leaves me the option to print or export so how would I go about submitting these returns to Hmrc if I turn on making tax digital again? There is no option to edit the dates thank you

Thanks for your reply, @mike510.

I appreciate the workarounds you've performed to find a resolution to your concern. I'll ensure you can send VAT returns seamlessly to HMRC.

While you disconnect from the Making Tax Digital (MTD), you'll no longer be able to submit digital VAT returns. Thus, you can export them so you'll be able to modify the dates.

Once done, you can reach out to HRMC to ask for other options you can take when submitting the VAT outside QuickBooks.

Also, here's an article you can refer to for more information about MTD: Set up MTD for VAT in QuickBooks Online and connect to HMRC.

Moreover, check out this link for detailed instructions on recording your VAT payments in QBO: Manage VAT payments in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know how else I can help you with tax forms or submitting your VAT in QuickBooks Online. I'm delighted to lend a helping hand. Keep safe always.
