Hi gcj1971, we don't currently have any reported issues with the CIS submissions - have you previously submitted a CIS return via QB successfully? Please check when entering the password that this is being typed manually and not copied/pasted, and that there are no blank spaces entered before/after. :folded_hands:
Never had a problem submitting before today. I tried manually entering correct password too. I just had to file via HMRC website with same log in details with no problems. I have same issue with submitting Next Contributions. QB Use to submit them fine. Then suddenly got error message saying couldn’t find a matching schedule date. I tried fixing with Nest, but still getting error message. I was told by QB it was an error with Nest. I gave up, as NEST said it was software problem. I just manually submit to Nest. Not happy about it, but I can’t fix the error myself.
I appreciate you for getting back to us, gcj1971.
Since Community is a public forum, we're unable to check what causes the error when submitting a CIS return.
I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They have tools such as screen-sharing that can pull up your account in a secure environment and check this odd behavior. Here's how to contact them:

I cannot submit CIS returns this morning. At first it said that my password had to be over 10 characters (which it never has been before), so I updated my government gateway password to suit. It now just says it cannot submit. I'll give the helpline a call.
Yes, that’s what it said when I tried to submit. I didn’t change my password as I knew it was correct. I manually submitted on HMRC website instead. Hope they sort it.
It has got something to do with HMRC updating something though as I also went back to reset my old password as the thought of updating it on all our client payrolls was unappealing, and it says new passwords have to be over 10 characters long (my original one wasn't). Hoping that whatever change HMRC have made is picked up and allowed for in QBO soon.
Hi,
Ive just had the same issue and have been submitting CIS return via QB for over a year. I’ve always used a 9 digit password which has not changed and still works on HMRC / GovGateway. But QB says I need to enter a password of 10
or more digits. Does not make sense.
I appreciate your effort going through GovGateway to see if your password works, @Tracey c. I also wish you didn't have to go through all these hurdles when submitting CIS return through QuickBooks Online.
I understand the convenience of being able to submit your CIS returns on time. Since this involves your password, we’re unable to check it here for security reasons. I’d like to turnaround this experience by routing you to the right support.
Here's how:

As a workaround, you’ll want to file it manually via HMRC. You can visit this website: HMRC.
You can read through this article for more details about filing Constructions Industry Scheme (CIS) return directly to HMRC in QuickBooks Online: How to submit a CIS return.
I’ve included this reference to help you record CIS suffered and submit the figures to HMRC: Record Deductions Suffered under CIS in QuickBooks Online.
Feel free to post again or reply in this thread if you need further assistance with filing CIS returns. I'm always here to guide you. Take care.
Hi Tracy,
I'll save you some time, don't bother with QBO support (they're fab, but not for this one), they'll take you through all the usual steps and then conclude that it is an error with HMRC, and ask you to get in touch with HMRC.
To be fair, it does appear to be an issue with HMRC. My password has always been 9 characters for quite some time. After trying a change with HMRC and then realising it didn't resolve the QBO CIS issue, I went to change it back so I didn't have the faff of updating it everywhere else, and HMRC does now say it has to be more than 10 characters etc. I think HMRC have updated their side of things.
Payrolls started going through OK, and then several times on Monday, and once yesterday, I had to manually reset my HMRC password (kept using the same one and that was fine), because it would intermittently stop working. It is definitely as HMRC's end because the password would not work just logging into my GG, as well as through QBO.
We are getting payrolls sorted now, but CIS still an issue, so I suspect that it is either just the fact that there is instability at HMRC's end, or because QBO need to fix a bug/interface issue to do with the new password requirements at HMRC.
We submitted all our CIS's manually this month, but hope this will get resolved soon. In QBO's defence, I do think this issue originates from HMRC. I have also had the same problem on Xero.
