Hi Quickbooks Team, I am having the same issue as everyone else here. I have got my confirmation from HMRC for being registered for MTD. I have cahnged the user in File VAT MTD (therefore forgetting the old connection and re-creating the new connection in MTD) That has all connected fine. It is now the end of my VAT quarter 30/06/2019 and I am trying to file (well in time as I anticipated issues). I am getting the repeated message to check my VAT number. No matter what format I put it in. Does it need the GB in front of it? Does it need spaces? I would appreciate some help on this as I don't think anyone's question has yet been sorted about this problem. Now that I am registered with HMRC I cannot unregister. I have been a Quickbooks user since 1999 and this is the first issue I have been truly stumped with

Hello KC1998,

 

You do not need to enter the GB, or use any spaces. Just the number itself. If you are still getting the error, please send a screenshot of this over.

Thank you.  I reset the VAT number to just numbers (no spaces) and the connection worked :smileyhappy:

Just tried to file next Q VAT & guess what Quickbooks??!! Yes, it happened again!

Fix worked again thank goodness but come on fix this bug please!

We file monthly VAt returns so have been using MTD for several months - mostly successfully!

 

I have just gone to complete the August VAT return and have been greated with this error message.

 

I have tried cancelling my authority and re-authorising - this hasn't helped.  Message still appears when I try to 'File MTD'

 

Please help.

The reason you are unable t submit the VAT return is due to HMRC carrying out maintenance until approximately 4pm today.

Would have been nice if HMRC had put such info on their website , or even better when I contacted their helpdesk for them to tell me.

Wasted hours on this now

Had the same issue with the last quarter's return but managed to get it to work in the end.  Now having the same problem with this quarter's return.  I can't remember how I managed to solve it last time.  I have removed the authority with HMRC but it is still saying to check VAT number (which is right).  Please help someone!  I've spent hours this evening trying to figure it out and return is due tomorrow!

Thanks for making sure that you have the correct VAT number, Karen. Let's get the behavior resolved, so you can file your VAT return on time.

 

We can check if a browser issue hinders from recognizing your VAT number. If you'll still the same thing after performing some steps, we'll recommend checking this with Support. They can use a screen-sharing tool to see your setup and check the root cause of the issue.

 

Please log in to QuickBooks in a private window and enter your VAT number. This is a good way to start checking browser issues and this will disable the cache from saving your browsing history. If it works fine, you can go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. If not, please try other browsers to isolate the case.

  1. Click on Help and choose Contact us.
  2. In the description field, enter something like MTD Error Message - please check your VAT reg no.
  3. Click Let's talk or Continue, depending on what you see.
  4. Choose from Message an agent or Talk to a specialist.

What Quickbooks are assuming is that you have registered for MTD. This has to be done separately through the HMRC website before your software will communicate. 

 

Basically if you are not registered with HMRC they do not recognise your VAT number and hence the misleading error message.

Hi Quickbooks

 

I have Quickbooks desktop 2020 and 3 different companies I file VAT for. I have used QB for many years. I have just filed VAT via File VAT MTD for one of my companies but when trying to do the same for the 2nd company I am getting the same message as all the others. I have tried the fix mentioned in this string but it has not worked for me. I have Removed Authority and logged in again to HMRC using the 2nd company VAT details but still get the same massage "Please check VAT number and try again". Please can you post a proper response/solution to this problem. I am not able to file VAT for my other two companies and now running out of time.

Since you're still getting the same error message after following the steps shared in this thread, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They are able to pull up your account using their screen-sharing (remote access)tool and further investigate the cause of this odd behavior. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps to fix this for you.

 

Here's how to reach them:

 

  1. In your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) go to the Help menu at the top to get to the QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click the Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.
