Hello CTints, Thanks for posting in the Community. In answer to your question, yes it could impact things. Is this your first return in Quickbooks? Does the period you are filing start with the 2020 date? If not could you check on the HMRC gateway what dates HMRC is expecting and does Quickbooks match those dates?
has anyone received this error message when attempting to link quickbooks to HMRC
"Message":"You do not have the proper permission to access that feature.","dojoLocale":"en-gb","state":"Error"
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, @paul272727.
I'm here to lay down possible reasons why you're getting this kind of error while connecting QuickBooks Online to HMRC.
You might want to double-check the following causes while trying to connect with HRMC:
Next, try some of these suggestions to get your QuickBooks back to normal if you encounter the Take action status when attempting to connect to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. Check out this page to aid the potential error: Take action status in connecting to HMRC for MTD.
Furthermore, this article will demonstrate how to configure QuickBooks Online Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. It is a new method for companies to manage their taxes and electronically submit their VAT legal returns to HMRC. Hi,
I have been filing my VAT returns manually for some time instead of Quickbooks sending them direct, now with MTD I can no longer do that.
My Quickbooks says I am MTD enabled but I have a VAT return not filed from 31/03/2021 (this return was filed manually on my HMRC vat account) that I am unable to get past with the message "can not connect to HMRC"
I need to submit my last VAT return, I can see this return through my reports but not able to send.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks you.
Hi Nigel, please check that the VAT due amount and the start and end period dates match those which were submitted to HMRC and then temporarily disable MTD in QuickBooks. To do this, click Edit VAT from the VAT dashboard > Edit settings > Toggle off the switch for MTD > Confirm on the pop-up (this won't impact any settings with HMRC). After this, click on Prepare return > Mark as filed. You can then switch MTD back on and the open return will reflect your next period due. :)
A have a problem when trying to authorise Quickbooks to connect with HMRC. I get the following message;
{"Message":"You do not have the proper permission to access that feature.","dojoLocale":"en-gb","state":"Error"}
I then tried to disconnect from MTD in settings getting this message;
Hi Sophia9, thanks for joining this thread - this message is usually caused by the user permissions in QuickBooks. For example, you may have previously had access to set up MTD as a company admin, but have since been changed to a standard user. As MTD is restricted to primary and company admin users, please double-check your user role before re-authorising. :)
I am an accountant using QB accountant for my clients accounts. I have to become VAT registered now myself. I use the 'my practice' feature for my accounts but do I use my Agent Services Account credentials to submit my own VAT returns?
Thanks in advance
Lynn
Hi all - hoping someone can help as I'm hitting several brick walls! I was registered for VAT under a different VAT number a few years ago - and MTD worked fine. I then didn't need to be VAT registered so closed that scheme. From Jan 2023 I am VAT registered again with a different VAT number. I've updated that VAT number in Quickbooks and have pointed it to the new Gov Gateway log in which holds that VAT info. I "filed" any VAT submissions which suddenly looked to be open and closed my books - so the only open period is Jan - Mar 2023 (so, fine). OK so when I go to authorise using all the new info, it either sticks on the authorise page on Quickbooks (ie doesn't progress, doesn't do anything at all), or it fails. I can't see the reason why - if I go to HMRC I can see that Quickbooks is authorised so seems fine at that end. Any ideas welcome! Thanks
Hello Sammisixx, thanks for posting on this thread, can you please either reach out to our chat support or ring our helpline on 0808 234 5337 the line is open mon to fri 8am to 7pm and is free from any UK landline or mobile, as there would be a few things for this and we would need to get some information off you to then be able to look into why this is happening to you.
I moved to online from desktop and have authorised MTD.
After authorisation, I went to the VAT page which showed two open returns, 1 amber (filed in September 22) and one red (filed in December 22), a 3rd return filed in March 23 is not there at all. Following the instructions I marked the amber as filed, there was an outstanding balance of 1.76 for this although I am unsure why (HMRC shows the return as paid in full). I tried putting a payment against it, which marked it green and I closed the books as per the troubleshooter. However, the red return is still showing red and there are no actions I can take. Clicking on the "take action" link just refers me to the error at the top of the screen which says
Let’s check a few things out to get you back on track. "
Any help gladly received as the return was due yesterday.
Thanks for joining in on this discussion, @seskauk. I can help you fix MTD issues and errors in QuickBooks Online (QBO) so you can get back to filing VAT returns.
Keeping your VAT accounting period updated will help ensure that all returns are accurately filed and submitted on time. This error may occur if you have a pending or unsuccessful VAT return submission (this will have an amber or red icon next to it).
Please follow these steps on how to fix it:
For more troubleshooting options for different issues, please visit this article: Fix MTD issues and errors in QuickBooks Online.
Furthermore, the error message you received indicates that you'll need to register for MTD and wait for email confirmation of your registration from HMRC before connecting to QBO.
Additionally, here's an article that explains how to adjust your VAT liability, what happens after you make a VAT adjustment, and things to remember before submitting a VAT return: Make VAT adjustments in QuickBooks Online.

Hi,
There is no option marked "Go for it" next to the return.
We have been registered for MTD for some time, having submitted the last 3 returns that way.
Thanks
Thanks for getting back to the thread, @seskauk. I can share some troubleshooting to help fix the issue.
We can perform the basic browser troubleshooting process to isolate the issue. Also, this helps fix your browser to work better and faster caused of stored cookies and cache that block you from accessing some features and the Go for it option.
You'll want to restart your browser. Then, try updating your bank in an incognito or private browser. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a new private window:
Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
Safari: press Command + Shift +
If it works, you can return to your regular browser and clear your browser's cache. Then you may see if it fixes the problem and gets started on the tasks at hand. Nevertheless, you can use another supported browser.
You can refer to the following articles for future needs:
Please keep me posted if you need further assistance in managing VAT and other QuickBooks concerns. It will be my pleasure to assist. Take care always!
Thanks, I have tried both incognito (chrome) and using a different browser which has no cached info for the site and unfortunately there is still no Go For It option.

Hi There
I am really struggling, when I click authorise now when trying to connect with HMRC I get the error
I have checked that my VAT number is correct I have tried running from a secure page and still it wont work any help would be much appreciated,
Thanks
Hello Pezzer23, the reason your getting that error is because you don't have the correct user permissions to do it that's why you get that message come up. You need to change your user permissions first before you'll be able to do this.
.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to get the MTD VAT part of QB working. My VAT return is due this month, HMRC are not helpful - they have escalated it but I don't know when they will contact me. I spent over 2 1/2 hours on the phone and got no help. My government gateway is showing that QB is authorised but I just get this error:
This could be because you recently:
If so, hold tight. HMRC should restore the connection within 72 hours.
Has it been longer than 72 hours? Then contact HMRC"
.It has been over a month, I've contacted HMRC but no help. I'm getting a bit desperate and stressed by this. All the details appear correct so I don't know what's wrong. I haven't recently done either of those things nor has the connection been restored. In fact, the VAT portion of QB has not worked since I starting using the software in April so I'm wishing we had looked for a better alternative. I need this sorting out. I've tried the QB helpline but they say its HMRC and HMRC did say it was QB....so one of you needs to take responsibility for this as I am not willing to incur penalties due to the software and the connectivity being at fault.
@Dave Green did this sort itself out? Mine has never connected properly since I started using QB in April. I now need to submit my VAT return by 07 August - latest.....and I'm not convinced it will work!
Exactly the same issue, since December. Have been in contact with HMRC several times now, the latest being today, and they're unable to help - seem to think the issue is with QB. Quickbooks are impossible to reach so are of no help at all. 1st penalty point arrived already so thinking of just changing software and demanding a refund for the last 9 months of zero service from QB! Appalling experience from start to finish, not user-friendly at all.
I found some help on another thread - in a nutshell if you go to the VAT page, edit settings, then turn MTD off on the toggle button. Then click on any returns that might say pending, when it opens click the green button that says Mark as Filed, do this for all of the open returns that have already been filed until the one you need is available. Then switch the MTD back on and it should work....at least it did for me! I spent an hour or two reading through loads of threads on here! Good luck! Let me know how you get on. Ali. :)
How do I reauthorise the connection between QuickBooks Online and HMRC? I have read all the links and advice but none seem to relate to the issue i'm having. I have been using MTD for over a year but havent had an email to say i need to reauthorsie
