Which clients are affected by MTD for Income Tax?

If you have clients who are self-employed or landlords with an annual income over £50,000, they will be legally required to start keeping digital records and send quarterly updates of income and expenditure to HMRC using compatible software from April 2026. This requirement will extend to those with an annual income over £30,000 from April 2027.

What are the requirements for those affected?

All affected self-employed individuals and landlords will need to:

keep digital business records

use MTD-compatible accounting software such as QuickBooks

send quarterly business income and expenses updates to HMRC through the software

finalise the business’s income in a declaration which confirms that the updates sent are correct, and make any accounting adjustments
