The practice and the vision

A Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of experience, Abu Bakar Uzir has been involved with QuickBooks since its early days in Malaysia; initially using the desktop version of the software. When QuickBooks Online officially launched in Malaysia, Abu Bakar became one of the country's first Pro Advisors. His firm currently serves between 300 to 500 clients with an average revenue of 5 to 20 million Malaysian Ringgit.

Abu Bakar's vision was to find an affordable software platform for SMEs that could provide accounting benefits beyond simple bookkeeping. He was influenced by his previous corporate experience using online platforms and sought a solution that would allow him to work with clients remotely and efficiently.

I've been using QuickBooks for my practice and for my client until today... I love [QuickBooks] very much.

The strategic switch to QuickBooks

As the accounting landscape evolved, Abu Bakar was drawn to the convenience of online platforms. He initially subscribed to the US and Singapore versions of QuickBooks Online before the software officially launched in Malaysia.

He chose QuickBooks over other options because it offered an online platform that provided a convenient way to manage accounts. This web-based solution allowed him to work from his office while still serving a wide range of clients, shifting his role from a simple bookkeeper to an advisor who provides significant accounting benefits.

It's not just doing bookkeeping for submission, but to bring the accounting benefit for the client.

Seamless client onboarding

The transition to QuickBooks Online was built on a foundational shift in how Abu Bakar's firm collaborates with its clients. By adopting the platform, the firm enabled a new way of working "as a team between client and the accountant." The "user friendly interface" was a critical factor in this process, especially when dealing with clients who are not accounting professionals. This approach helped overcome the challenge of moving from older desktop systems, as clients became more engaged with and "willing to pay" for a more affordable platform that facilitated a new, more collaborative relationship.

The QuickBooks impact and tangible benefits

QuickBooks has had a profound impact on Abu Bakar's practice by enabling a more collaborative and efficient workflow. The cloud-based platform allows him and his clients to work together as a team. This approach has positioned his firm to attract clients who appreciate the value of accounting services beyond basic compliance.

The platform's features, such as remote access and banking integration, have enabled his team to manage accounts with greater ease and focus on providing higher-level advisory services.

For me, I like using QuickBooks because it's a secured cloud-based accounting platform... a very user-friendly interface... and seamless banking integration.

Future-proofing the practice

Looking ahead, Abu Bakar sees the accounting profession continuing to evolve with the adoption of online platforms. He notes that Malaysian accountants are increasingly accepting subscription-based online platforms and that clients are now more willing to pay for these services. This shift signifies a greater appreciation for the value that modern accounting tools provide.

He believes that the future lies in platforms that are responsive to local market needs, such as Malaysia's new e-invoicing regulations. He also sees opportunities for expansion with banking integration, specifically mentioning the need for integrations with Islamic banks to penetrate new market segments.
