Is work stressing you out? Whether you’re working in an office, on location or from home, sometimes work can start to take a toll on your health and wellbeing. In order to manage your workload and look after your own mental state, it’s important that you recognise the signs of stress. Here are five ways you can reduce stress at work, while still making progress on your priorities.
1 Outsource tasks
Many people feel like they have to do it all, particularly if they are self-employed or running their own small business. But that’s just not the case anymore. There are many affordable ways you can outsource tasks that are taking up too much of your time, like hiring a virtual assistant for example. You can engage with contractors or freelancers who might be able to temporarily help you with a big task or project. You can also easily hire experts who have knowledge or expertise in a particular area where you may fall short.
2 Take regular breaks
Sometimes you don’t have the luxury of taking a holiday or having time off work, but everyone needs a break. If you’re going through a particularly stressful time at work, you need to make sure you are taking regular breaks throughout the day. Get away from your desk if you’re in the office, or get out of the house if you’re working from home. Take a walk and enjoy some fresh air, do some meditation and make sure you are breathing deeply. These little breaks can help make a big difference, especially if you are working long hours.
3 Tap into workplace resources
Many workplaces offer resources and services related to the health and wellbeing of their staff. When you’re stressed out at work, it might be worthwhile seeing what’s on offer, in case you can make use of any counselling services, gym memberships or health programs. If you work for yourself, you might need to invest in your own health and wellbeing. There are many low-cost activities you can also try, whether it’s using a meditation app, going for a run or walk or making sure you are eating well.
4 Communicate to others
It’s important to let others know how you’re feeling when your stress levels are rising. Take a moment to identify the key areas of stress, whether it’s a certain project or task, or the amount of work that’s on your plate and let your boss, colleagues or co-workers know. It’s also important to communicate how you are feeling to loved ones, so they can be aware of the situation. You might even find that talking about it helps to relieve some of the internal pressure.
5 Reprioritise and refocus
To help relieve some of your stress, take a moment to shuffle your priorities. Get rid of anything you can either set aside for later or outsource to someone else. Make sure the only items on your list are ‘must-dos’ and then order them according to urgency. Break down your big goals or projects into smaller, more achievable tasks, and write them down so you can tick them off one by one. Instead of being overwhelmed with all the tasks you need to do, simply focus on the one task you can do today.
