Are you living the open plan office life? If so, you may be familiar with overhearing other people’s conversations and having little to no privacy for eight hours every day. While open plan offices are believed to encourage collaboration and community, there are some truths about working in an open environment that just can’t be denied. Here are 10.
1 You will get annoyed at loud colleagues
Whether they’re talking to clients on the phone or telling co-workers about their weekends, if you work in an open place office, you’ll hear e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.
2 Everyone knows what you’re having for lunch
Lunch becomes a hot topic of conversation. Regular comments include, ‘What do you have for lunch?’, ‘What’s that smell?’, and ‘Can I have some?’
3 It’s highly likely you’ll catch the office flu
Working in such close proximity to people means when one team member gets sick, you all get sick.
4 It’s impossible to plan birthday surprises
Even just passing around a card to sign, without the birthday person seeing, requires serious sleuthing.
5 You’ll become reliant on your headphones
Want some peace and quiet? Need a break from your co-workers? Sick of constant interruptions? Your only option – headphones.
6 If you’re running late, everybody knows about it
Your empty chair and desk make it painfully obvious when you’re not at work by 9am.
7 You have to watch what you say 24/7
Because someone is ALWAYS listening.
8 You take serious ownership of your desk
Since your desk is the only space you have, you cannot stand it when other people’s mess creeps onto your side.
9 Dirty dishes are a no-no
Leaving dirty dishes on your desk is strictly forbidden.
10 You can’t do any online shopping
With everyone watching your computer, you can’t do any cheeky online shopping between the hours of 9 and 5.
