The practice and the vision

After working for 10 years in a public accounting firm, Cecilia Tong decided to start her own practice, JJ Trusted Services, in early 2024. With experience primarily in tax and bookkeeping, she was confident in her ability to maintain good relationships with clients. Her firm, which she runs as a partnership and collaboration model with other experienced professionals, has about 10 to 15 clients and counting.

One of her biggest challenges when starting the firm was attracting new clients and building recognition. As her firm continues to grow, she believes that referrals from her current client base will help the business expand more quickly.

The strategic switch to QuickBooks

Before starting her own practice, Cecilia was familiar with QuickBooks through her previous firm, where colleagues used the older desktop version. She noted that the desktop version was not only more expensive but also had a slightly outdated layout. While she found it user-friendly, she knew she needed a modern solution for her new practice.

In her search for the right software, she attended an accounting workshop and had conversations with different vendors. She also tried out other accounting software, like Xero, but thought that it wasn't designed for accountants and was difficult to use for specific general adjustments.

After comparing options and considering feedback from colleagues, she made her decision.

I think QuickBooks is a very good software for accountants... So I decided to go with QuickBooks.

Seamless client onboarding

Cecilia's transition to using QuickBooks Online was "quite smooth." She had no major challenges in learning the software and appreciated the support provided by the QuickBooks team, especially for "data migration from other software for my clients." She also found the online training and pro advisor test helpful in becoming more familiar with the system.

The transition is quite smooth, especially the support for the data migration from other software for my clients. So I really appreciate that support from the team.

She currently uses QuickBooks Online for her clients' bookkeeping needs, while some clients prefer her tax services alone. She has successfully onboarded clients with her new software.

The QuickBooks impact and tangible benefits

QuickBooks has significantly impacted Cecilia's daily workflow. She finds the software to be "very user friendly" and "accurate," with features that help her meet clients' needs efficiently. Her favourite features are the reporting functions and the general adjustment option, which she uses to "freely pass any unnecessary general adjustment." She is able to quickly generate accurate reports like a P&L to give clients a business overview. She also likes that data entry is "very smooth."

I like QuickBooks because it's user friendly, it's accurate, and it's safe.

Future-proofing the practice

Cecilia advises other accountants who are still struggling with manual processes to "transit to QuickBooks Online, because you can always export the data into Excel format." She sees a future where AI will play a big role in accounting, potentially impacting efficiency and the time spent on work, and believes that the future of accounting will require a shift in mindset and an embrace of new technology.
