4 tips for running a successful home-based business

2 min read

Are you wondering how to run a business from home and stay motivated? Working from home is completely different to working in an office and it can take some time to adjust. But just because you’re not surrounded by colleagues anymore, doesn’t mean you can’t create a successful business. Here are four tips for running a successful home-based business.

Be accountable

Being your own boss certainly has its perks, whether it’s taking a day off here or there, or finishing early on Fridays. While it can be easy to take your time with tasks, since you don’t have a boss looking over your shoulder, it’s very important to hold yourself accountable.

There are many different ways to do this, so discover what works for you. Whether its daily alerts, calendar deadlines or engaging a family member or colleague for accountability.  Either way, set up your own deadlines and respect them – not only will this help you stay motivated, but your clients will benefit when you deliver excellent on time service.

Harness the power of social media

Whether you are running a product or service-based business, you need to determine the most relevant social media channels for your business. You can use these platforms to get your name, brand, product or service out into the marketplace.

These days more and more businesses are moving away from traditional retail space and using their online presence to gain customers, clients and new sales. Managing multiple social media platforms is a huge time commitment, so it may be worthwhile investing in social media scheduling tools that can save you time and effort in the long run.

Get out of the house

The fact that you run your business from home and not from a traditional office space means you are saving (maybe a lot!) of money on commercial rent. However, it doesn’t mean you have to work from home every single day. It’s a great idea to visit your local coffee shops for client or business meetings or work remotely at least once a week.

Not only can this be convenient for your clients, but it gives you the chance to get out of the house and enjoy a change of scenery. You could also look into a co-working space for a day or two a week, which could also help you network with other like-minded small business owners.

Learn how to use cloud software

Keeping your business finances organised correctly and monitoring cash flow are one of the most important things business owners need to do. Using a cloud-based accounting software such as Quickbooks Online allows small business owners to have instant access to the latest software without ever having to worry about a product update again.

QuickBooks also allows you to easily track your expenses anywhere at anytime, using either a laptop or even a mobile phone. Getting your business finances sorted, means you have more time to do what you do best.
