Have to turn off Host multi-user access to access file on remote computer...

Hey Quickbooks community,

First time user here.

We do IT work for a company and there are two companies in one and they use Quickbooks desktop and shares files amongst computers and workstations.

One computer for the one company called CFG-NEWMAIN is setup as a server to host multi-user access for a Quickbooks file and other workstations in the two companies. It has Quickbooks Pro Desktop 2021 installed. However, there is also a second computer, PHOENIXX-MAIN, setup as a server called multi-user access to another company file and as far a I am aware, the only computer that is supposed to access the second company file is CFG-NEWMAIN. PHOENIXX-MAIN has Quickbooks desktop 2020 installed. However, in order to access the file, they have to turn off Host Multi-User Access on the CFG-NEWMAIN computer in order to be able to open the file on the PHOENIXX-MAIN computer.

I'm wondering if they upgrade the license on the PHOENIXX-MAIN computer to 2021 version, would that resolve this issue or is there another way to resolve this issue of accessing the file without having to turn off Host Multi-User Access on the CFG-NEWMAIN computer?

Thanks in advance.

Have to turn off Host multi-user access to access file on remote computer...

Hi there RJSBirrd,

Making sure your software is set up correctly is an important thing to make the system run smoothly. QuickBooks Desktop is a robust tool able to help you manage the books of your company from a few computers on the same server. I can point you in the right direction.

In order to know the effect of using multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop and multiple companies on the same server, I recommend reaching out to our support team outside of the Community. They'll be able to look at both company files and software and be able to recommend if an upgrade could help you use that company file on more computers. You can find ways to reach out to them in the Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies.
