Due to and from accounts

Help please. I have 2 companies. Let’s call them A & B. Company A has been using company B’s debit card to purchase material. How do I properly write off the expenses for company A to reflect the profit and loss of each job???

Due to and from accounts

Hello Katie_UrbanInteriors,

Welcome back to the QuickBooks Community. I see it's been a while since your last visit and I'm hoping that things have been going well for you and your companies. I can see how this crossing of funds between companies would complicate your bookkeeping, but I also know it's vital that these transactions and payments are accurately accounted for in QuickBooks Desktop. I'll steer you in the right direction for this.

Your best resource for this sort of situation is going to be an accountant or bookkeeping professional. They'll be able to let you know whether it's as simple as setting up some extra accounts to show this money movement or if you could even potentially tweak something like the instructions given for mixing business and personal funds to suit the needs of this situation. It's important to me that you have the correct steps for this so that you can clearly show what's happened in case any questions are raised later.

If you're interested in reading more about the mixing of business and personal funds method that I mentioned, follow these steps in QuickBooks Desktop.

  1. Select the Help menu.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click the Help tab.
  4. Click Search.
  5. Enter "mixing business and personal funds" into the search bar and hit enter.

You'll see a few articles that come up which outline this process. I know this situation is a mix of two businesses' funds rather than a mix of business and personal funds, but, like I said, it's potentially something that could be tweaked to fit your needs. An accountant, in particular one that knows QuickBooks Desktop, would be able to best advise on that.

If you're not already working with an accountant, I recommend checking out our list of QuickBooks-certified professionals here: Find an Accountant. When you enter your city or postal code, you'll see a list of accountants near you, and you can even use the filters to narrow down the search results.
