When changing from Exclusive of Tax or Inclusive of Tax why do my line items change instead of the total? I entered the line items, that is that data that I put in.

Hi danielvaudrin,

I'm glad to see you're taking advantage of the sales tax calculation features available in QuickBooks Online. It's the best way to make sure everything is recorded perfectly, especially when you're unsure of the sales tax amounts for a transaction. Once the information is entered, the Amounts are option allows you to quickly change how it's displayed. The line amounts shown will change to keep the underlying journal entry the same. This is helpful in maintaining balanced books, especially if the transaction has already been filed or reconciled. I'll be happy to help sort this out.

The best practice is to select the necessary option before entering your amounts. If you find yourself using one option more than the other, you can easily set a default in a few simple steps:

  1. Click on the Gear icon then select Account and Settings.
  2. Click on Advanced.
  3. Select the appropriate Default tax rate selection in the Accounting section.
  4. Click Save then Done.

To change this option without losing your entered data, please select Out of scope of Tax before Inclusive of Tax then select the necessary tax codes. If you'd like to see us tweak this feature, please submit feedback to our engineering team. Every bit of feedback you submit helps us concentrate our efforts on the features most important for your business.

I'm here for you, so feel free to reach out any time you have questions.
