Changed a GL to a product & service item and it went and changed all previous transactions to that new GL. How can I get the change from today only?

Hello keith70,

Thanks for joining us here in the QuickBooks Community forum. Being mindful of how the changes you're making to items in your account will impact your books is essential, and I appreciate wanting to know more about how to change the accounts related to a product or service without it impacting prior transactions. I can help with this.

When you're making these kinds of changes to an item in QuickBooks Online, the program will often offer up a prompt or a way to decide whether these are just changes moving forward or if you'd like to retroactively apply the changes to prior entries. This option exists for when you're making changes to service items, but isn't available for products.

For service items, a checkbox will appear as soon as you select a new account from the drop-down menu. It'd look something like this.

If you don't want your changes to apply to historical transactions, simply leave the box unchecked and you'll be good to go.

However, this option isn't available for inventory items and any changes made will automatically apply to all historical transactions. One solution you can consider is creating a brand new item for when you need to start tracking with new accounts.

I know this creates extra work for you, so I recommend submitting feedback about this to our product development team using the steps outlined here: How do I submit feedback? This helps our team see what would benefit users in QuickBooks Online and then they can consider those suggestions for future updates to the program. Another option in the meantime is using an inventory management app instead of QuickBooks Online's inventory feature. Using the Apps tab, you can research third-party options that sync with QuickBooks Online that may offer you more of what you're looking for when it comes to managing your inventory.

I hope this has helped shed light on the situation. I'll be here if you'd like any further clarification.
