Credit Card Points

I have a client who used credit card points as a way to make a payment against the credit card.

What is the best way to enter that transaction?

Credit Card Points

Hi there,

If your client has points available to them through their credit card, it makes a lot of sense for them to use these points to make a payment against the credit card. I'd be happy to help point you in the right direction for help with this.

There's no direct way to record this type of transaction in QuickBooks Online, as it's very unique. You can consider creating a new asset account, and record the opening balance with the value of the credit card points. Then, you can use a journal entry to move the funds from your asset account, to your credit card account.

To create the asset account, click the Accounting tab on the left navigation menu, then select the Chart of Accounts. Click New, then select Asset as the account type.

Once you record the opening balance to the asset account, you can create a journal entry to record the movement of these funds from said asset account into your credit card account. To make a journal entry, click the + New button from the left navigation menu, then select Journal Entry.

In this case, I would highly recommend reaching out to your accountant to confirm that these steps will be the correct way to reach your goals. If you're not already connected to an accountant, you can find one in your area here: Find a ProAdvisor

Have a great week.
