When using the "receipt snap" feature on my mobile device, why can I not manually add a tip amount when reviewing the receipt in quickbooks?

Hi there,

The new Receipts tab in QuickBooks Online lets you easily create expenses from your paper receipts. This saves you tons of time entering data, and it also lets you ditch your paper receipts that can really pile up. I'll explain how the feature works, as well as how to account for your tips.

When you use the receipt scanning feature, the purpose of this tool is to record expenses exactly as they are on the receipt. The feature captures the receipt data, and extracts this information to enter into QBO. You'll review the receipts to ensure all of the accounts and tax information are recorded as intended.

It sounds like you're trying to record a cash tip that isn't reflected on the receipt. There's no way to add this tip to the receipt, as the system simply scans what's printed on the paper copy. If you need to record a tip expense, you'll do so by manually adding a new expense into QuickBooks and categorize it as you see fit.

You may want to consult your accountant to see whether or not you should be tracking tips to a separate Tip Expenses account, or if you'll enter expenses to the same expense account as your original receipt.

I can see how adding tips from the Review screen in the Receipts tab would be handy. I recommend submitting feedback about this to our product development team by clicking the Gear icon > Feedback
