Hello,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. QuickBooks Online offers a solid projects management feature where you can easily create new projects and manage your business more efficiently. As you noticed, the Projects section was recently updated with a new look and capabilities. The option "Do you organize sub-customers as projects? You can convert them into projects instead." is no longer available. Instead, you can create new projects for the sub-customers straight from the Customer detail page. To do so, follow these steps:
If the Sub-Customer has existing transactions, you can move them individually to the new project. Simply select the transaction you wish to reassign, then change the Customer drop-down menu to the according project.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
I hope this method is not the only option, as manually moving individual expenses from a Sub-customer to a Project is unfeasible, as there are THOUSANDS of expenses associated and I am also uninterested in having double "Jobs" as it doesn't replace the existing Sub-customer, only creates a new one. The option to "Convert" would be ideal, but is no longer available.
Thanks for the feedback Denziger. At the moment, the above steps are the only available option in the system for creating Projects associated with a sub-customer. I'll make sure to let the development team know about your concerns. You can also make your voice heard directly by going to the gear icon in your QuickBooks Online account, then selecting Feedback.

I am quite disappointed by this response. The ability to use projects in QBO just became available in Canada. We were so very disappointed when we converted from QBD to QBO just weeks ago to find the projects in QBD were converted to sub-customers. You then provided the ability to convert them for a mere few weeks and took it away so fast we had no time to react. I am formally requesting your engineering team put the functionality back in. In order to set up a project and transition every transaction to a project would be thousands of transactions to deal with. This would be terribly time consuming.
I hear what you're saying, lmorelmisener. I appreciate your feedback.
Projects is still a fairly new feature in Canadian QuickBooks Online accounts, and as with any new feature, the kinks will be worked out and finessed. I realize that the ability to convert sub-customers into projects was ideal, however we're committed to providing only features that work seamlessly. There were some issues arising with this conversion feature, which has taken us back to the drawing board. I'm encouraged that our engineering team will hear your thoughts, and we take our customer concerns seriously.
In the meantime, the above-mentioned steps are the best way to use Projects. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help.
Cheers.
This function is available in the US version of QBO. Are the two versions of QBO so different (US and Canada) that it can't be done in the Canadian version?
You make a valid point, however, two different product development teams work on QuickBooks Online. The Canadian developers work alongside the US team to implement what they can, but currently the Canadian team is still in the beginning stages with this particular feature. Again, I'd encourage you to submit your thoughts to our engineers directly by clicking the Gear icon > Feedback.
For us this is not a seamless option. We import our jobs from a job management system and they come in as sub-customers. We have no option to "create" a project as this won't sync back properly to our job management system. This change is HORRIBLE!! I can't believe we didn't even get a head-up about this!
Hello BK-PaulDavis,
I hear what you're saying about how these kinds of situations can impact a business and I'd like to go over this thread with you. Although it's been discussed here that the prompt "Do you organize sub-customers as projects?" has been removed, it's still in fact available for QuickBooks Online Canada. It could be that it was removed for a period and then returned or there was a temporary error that's been resolved since, but I'll follow up with my team to make sure we're on the same page with this option's availability.
This option will only appear if you have sub-customers on your QuickBooks Online customer list. If you don't have sub-customers set up, then the option won't be available. Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing in my own test account.
This article also outlines important details about what setup needs to be in place for your sub-customer in order to be able to convert it to a project: Change sub-customers into Projects
If you're still not seeing the option, I recommend contacting support to have someone take a closer look into this with you. That way, we'll be able to gather the details specific to your situation to get this sorted out. Here's how to get in touch.
Schedule a Callback or Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat. Support is available from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.
Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Enjoy the rest of your day!
