Moving Existing Job Information

Our company has used the "New Customer & Job" menu tab for years to create new customers (considered main job), then just select "Add Job" to create a sub job under the customer (i.e. sub jobs/phases for same customer/job often wi diff PO/billing info).  We are now having issues wherein we click 'Add Job' and QB insists on "Moving Existing Job Information" (Message:  Job-related information exists for this customer.  QB will assign the name "Job 1" to the existing job, but you can change the name by selecting and editing the name.  Click OK to accept the name and set up another job.  Click Cancel if you don't want to create any new jobs for this customer).  If we select OK, QB creates an exact duplicate of the existing Customer Job and elevates it as the Customer?!!  We presume this changed at some point with ongoing software updates.  Is there a work around?

A QuickBooks rep mentioned in a 2021 chat that, "If the Customer Exists and has Job Data and activity, and Later, you want to make a Job, it will force the existing info into 'Job 1'.  That said, there would be no reason to Make Another if you already have one.  If you have them and want to clean up the list, you Merge the job into the customer name by first Promoting the Job to the Customer."

Will Merging/Promoting help?  If so, how is it done?  We now have several messed up Customer files.  Desperately seeking help as this feature has created serious issues in the way we've always used QuickBooks.
