First lit on August 15, 1872, Burnt Coat Lighthouse on Hockamock Head was transferred to the Town of Swan’s Island from the Coast Guard in 1993, after Congress approved the necessary legislation. Without a resident caretaker, the boarded-up station, which included a keeper’s house, light tower, and bell house, had quickly fallen into disrepair after automation in 1975, but a restoration of the property began in 2006, with funding provided by the town and grants. Burnt Coat Harbor Light Station has undergone a remarkable transformation since 2006. The restored keeper’s house and tower are now open to the public in the summer months, and there is an apartment upstairs in the keeper’s house that is available for weekly rental during the summer. It is worth a visit to lighthouse’s website to see the maps, photos, and personal information collected by the Friends of the Swan’s Island Lighthouse.
