I have a construction business and would like to use the standard construction budgeting numbering for all projects as subaccounts and just change the master account number. Quickbooks won't accept these subaccounts, warning that the subaccount numbers are already in use. Is there any way I can get QB to allow this?
Hi there andersm0,
It's important that your accounts are well set up so that you can find transactions in your books easily. QuickBooks Desktop allows you to customize your chart of accounts in order to best suit the needs of your business. I can provide some information about your chart of accounts.
No accounts and sub-accounts within your chart of accounts can have the same number. What I can recommend is that you create a system of parts of the number that represent the project, and certain numbers represent the sub-account Here would be an example of this:
Main account for project 412 would have the number 41200.
Sub account one for project 412 would be 41201.
Sub account two for the same project would be 41202.
Main account for project 436 would be 43600
Sub accounts for this project would be 43601, 43602, and so on.

Thank-you, AlexM. Your suggestion is a workable way around this problem
