How can I reconcile a supplier refund on my credit card account?

Hello Carmine,

Reconciling in QuickBooks Online is a simply process that gives you the opportunity to match what you're seeing on your bank statement against what you've entered in QuickBooks. As long as the transaction is in your books and entered with the correct date and information, you should be able to breeze through the process. I'll help you with making sure you have your supplier refund recorded on your credit card in your books so you can get to reconciling.

The way to record a refund to a credit card in QuickBooks Online is as simple as choosing Credit Card Credit from the +New menu. You can learn how this feature works here: How can I record a cash back to my credit card account?

After that's entered, you should be able to easily work through the reconciliation process. Here are a few articles about that to help you along.

I hope that helps. Give me a shout if you have anything else you need a hand with.

How can I reconcile a supplier refund on my credit card account?

How do I handle the credit that shows up in the bank feed for the credit card account when a vendor credits the refund back on my card?

How can I reconcile a supplier refund on my credit card account?

Hey there PitPat,

Accurately accounting for refunds and credits is an important part of the bookkeeping process. I know how easy the bank feed feature in QuickBooks Online makes categorizing your transactions and reconciling your accounts, but I want to explain how in this case, excluding this transaction might be the best bet.

While you can try entering a Credit Card Credit from the + New button and matching it to the credit in the bank feed, these transactions don't always match in your bank feed. Give that a shot first though, just to be sure. You'll simply enter the amount of the credit and specify the supplier and account, and make sure that the date matches up to the date in the bank feed for good measure. Save it when you've finished entering the details, then navigate to the bank feed. Select the transaction and click Find Match to search for the credit card credit you've just entered.

If your Credit Card Credit appears, simply select it and Save to match. If you're unable to find the credit for a match, my recommendation is to select the the transaction in the bank feed and hit Exclude. All this does is move the transaction over to the Excluded tab. If at any point you want to try to categorize it again, you can do so by hitting Undo in the Action column. Since you've entered the Credit Card Credit into QuickBooks, the only difference you'll notice is during reconciliation, when the credit isn't automatically checked off for you. A quick check against your bank statement and you'll be able to manually check it off. It's no big deal!

If you've got any other questions about this, don't hesitate to reach out. I'd be happy to help. Have a great weekend!
