Hello loraine3,
It's great to see that you're using QuickBooks Online's Sales Tax module to track your taxes and remittances. It sounds like you're familiar with the module and are simply running into a snag with this message saying you can't delete the sales tax payment right now. Don't worry, I'm here to help.
Deleting a sales tax payment should be as simple as navigating to Taxes in the left menu, then the Payments tab in the Sales Tax section, and finally clicking the down arrow in the Action column for the payment to choose Delete. QuickBooks Online sometimes experiences these times of hiccups however, and they can occur for a number of reasons. Sometimes, these kinds of messages sort themselves out after a little bit, but you can also troubleshoot to make sure that it's not a cache, browser, app, or Internet issue causing the message to appear. Here are some steps you can try.
Go through those and feel free to stop once you reach one that solves the issue.
Another thing you can check on is whether the sales tax payment you're trying to delete is in a closed period of your books. While QuickBooks Online typically displays a message that says clearly that a transaction is in a closed period and you'd need to open it to work on the entry, sometimes errors like this pop up instead. Closing the books allows you to protect past transactions from being edited by accident, which could throw off your balances. I recommend checking on whether this might be the case for your books and opening the period before trying to delete the sales tax payment again.
It's possible to reopen the books by simply toggling the closed books feature off in your account and settings. Here are a couple of articles that can help.
If you're still running into the same message when trying to delete the sales tax payment, I recommend contacting the QuickBooks Online team outside of this forum. Doing that will give a member of our team the opportunity to work with you one-on-one to sort this out and get you back on track. There are a few ways you can get in touch.
