Vacation pay

Hey NP76,

I'm glad to see you've caught this early. Keeping everything accurate in your payroll will set you up for an easy tax season next year, and now is the best time to start 2020 on the right foot. Due to particularities with payroll regulations, it's especially important to record everything in a way compliant with your local laws. For this reason, I strongly recommend consulting your accountant before trying to fix this. I'll be happy to provide some basic information to get you started.

If you're okay with vacation being paid out, it will continue to accrue normally and will reach normal levels after some time. Please speak with your employee and accountant to see if you can keep this as a vacation advance. Alternatively, you can deduct it on the next pay cheque and manually adjust their vacation accruals. It's just a few easy steps to edit accrued vacation:

  1. Go to the Employees menu and select Employee Centre.
  2. From the list on the left, double-click the employee's name.
  3. Click on the Payroll Info tab.
  4. Click on Vacation Pay, then adjust the vacation accordingly.
  5. Click OK.

If you choose this method, it'll need to be deducted from their next pay cheque. This is work well-suited for your accountant, as they'll be able to determine how to approach this to maintain accurate tax calculations.  Check out our Find an Accountant page to find a QuickBooks pro in your area. You can enter in your postal code to find accountants near you, and filter for the product you're using. If you already know how you want this recorded, please reach out for some real-time assistance with a trained agent. These agents are great help in these situations and have the ability to use screen share sessions and other tools to help resolve your issues. Don't be afraid to reach out! I want to make sure this gets fixed early on.
