Hello brooksy2491,

Welcome to the Community. I'll be glad to share more info so you're on the right track with managing your payroll in QuickBooks.

When creating a cheque, you can enter the tax amounts on the page where you enter the employee info such as hours. I encourage you to check out this helpful article that shows you: How to create a bonus paycheque. You're welcome to ask other questions. Otherwise, for methods that go beyond the bonus cheque, I recommend consulting with your accountant for expert advice.

In the meantime, feel free to ask other questions in the comments below.

Hi Judy,

Yes, you can manually adjust the tax amount on a bonus check in QuickBooks Online (QBO) Payroll. Here's how to do it step by step:

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Navigate to Payroll Settings:

    • Go to the Gear Icon in the top-right corner of QBO.
    • Under the Your Company section, select Payroll Settings.
  2. Set Up Manual Tax Adjustments:

    • If you haven’t done this before, ensure you have the correct permissions to override tax amounts. You might need to check with your Admin or Payroll contact to enable this feature.
  3. Create the Bonus Paycheck:

    • From the left-hand navigation bar, select Payroll and then choose Employees.
    • Locate the employee for whom you want to create the bonus check and click their name.
    • Click Run Payroll.
  4. Enter the Bonus Amount:

    • In the payroll setup, select Bonus Only from the options.
    • Enter the bonus amount in the relevant field.
  5. Adjust the Tax Amount:

    • On the same screen, click Edit Taxes or a similar option (depending on your version of QBO Payroll).
    • You’ll see the default tax calculations. Click the tax you want to override and enter the desired amount manually.
    • Make sure the total taxes are balanced with your intended amounts.
  6. Preview and Confirm:

    • Review the paycheck details, including the manual tax override.
    • Click Preview Payroll to ensure everything looks correct.
  7. Submit the Payroll:

    • Once satisfied, click Submit Payroll to process the bonus check.
  8. Record Keeping:

    • After processing, print or save a copy of the paycheck for your records.
    • If needed, inform the employee about the tax adjustment on the bonus.

This process ensures you can manually control the tax withholding while maintaining accurate records. Let me know if you need further clarification!

Thanks,
