Can anyone can give me their thoughts on the inventory tracker feature? We run a construction company and many times I order high volumes of items.

I need to keep track of items like sinks, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures etc. I buy in large amounts, and need to keep track of these items, but also need to be able to pull them from "inventory" and post the cost of the item to the project, when we use the item.

Welcome to Community!  It's great to hear that you're looking into tracking your inventory for your construction business.  QuickBooks Online Plus has everything you need to add inventory and non-inventory items so you can easily track what's on hand and receive alerts when supplies are low. 

 

Once you've setup your inventory, two ways of tracking the items are sales receipts and invoices.  QuickBooks automatically adjusts the amount of items on hand, based on the amounts indicated on the transactions.  If you'd like to see what items are available or what's on order, you just hover over the quantity you enter for an item to see additional information.  You'll also see what's running low when you set reorder points and you can order directly from your account.  In addition, you can run reports to instantly see your cost of goods, best sellers, what's on hand and so much more.  When using the Projects feature, you'll be able to add your customers and all transactions directly within a specific project and track hourly cost rates to include wages and taxes for each worker.  Here's an article for your reference about how to set up and create projects.

 

If you'd like to proceed to set up inventory tracking but don't currently have QuickBooks Online Plus, you'll need to upgrade your subscription to access this feature. Here's how:

 

1. Click on the Gear in the top right

2. Select Account and Settings

3. Choose Billing and Subscriptions

4. Hit Upgrade and follow the prompts

Consider having a construction management app to integrate with your QBO. You will be able to job cost your inventory to the projects.

Do you work with a specific construction app?  If so, would you share which one you use?  We have looked at many, but are unsure of which way to go, plus it's so much work to set one up and then to change if it doesn't work the way you like.
