Hi hcarnduff.
Sales orders are a great way to record a sale that you plan to fulfill in the future such as back ordered items and knowing exactly which customer they are for. I'd be happy to go over closing old sales orders in QuickBooks Desktop.
Currently the only way to delete sales orders would be to do so one by one. Sales orders close themselves automatically when an invoice is made from it. When creating an invoice that has to do with a sales order I recommend opening the sales order and selecting Create invoice from the top menu. This will close the order once the invoice is made by marking it as invoiced in full.
If you wish to have the ability to delete multiple sales orders at once I suggest sending feedback to our development team and letting them know you'd like this feature added. You can send feedback by going to: Help>Send Feedback Online>Product suggestion. Once they receive your feedback they'll look into ways to possibly add this in future updates.
If you have any questions let us know and we'd be happy to help.
