How to enter a partial GST refund cheque?

My previous GST return showed a refund of $84.19, however the CRA sent me a cheque for only $80.74. I've entered the $80.74 as a refund but how do I deal with the $3.45 that the CRA kept? I need to file my next GST return but Quickbooks shows I have a credit of $3.45, when in reality it was paid as GST owing.

How to enter a partial GST refund cheque?

Thanks for joining us! I'm glad to hear you're using the sales tax centre in QuickBooks Online. It's one of the most powerful features in the system that helps you easily track your sales tax and produce accurate reports you can always rely on. I'll be happy to assist you with this.

 

To enter a partial GST payment or refund can be done in a few steps.

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Ensure Sales Tax is shown at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. ​Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with the return you'd like to record a partial refund/payment.
  4. Choose Filed from the All returns drop-down.
  5. Select Record payment from the drop-down in the Action column.
  6. Select the appropriate Payment type. Tip: Select Payment if the number is positive and Refund is if the number is negative.
  7. Enter the Payment/Refund date.
  8. (Optional) Use the Memo to include anything you want to remember about this payment.
  9. Record your partial payment/refund.

And voila! Having a partial payment/refund in the system wouldn't prevent you from filing your next return. Once you receive the other part of your refund, you can simply go back to the corresponding return and record it using the above steps.
