Payroll

I run a daycare in BC and have an employee starting in January. BC is providing me with $6 an hour to help supplement for my emloyee (ECE wage enhancement). I want to add this $6 an hour to their paycheck separately from the salary I'm paying as the supplement may end at any time. Is this possible with QuickBooks payroll?"?

Payroll

Hello LC99,

Welcome to the Community. QuickBooks offers a versatile payroll module that helps you pay your staff with ease. I'll be glad to provide more info so you're on the right track.

In order to accomplish your goal in QuickBooks,  I recommend running a bonus cheque. I encourage you to check out this helpful article that shows you: How to create a bonus paycheque. You're welcome to ask other questions. Otherwise, for methods that go beyond the bonus cheque, I recommend consulting with your accountant for expert advice.

In the meantime, feel free to ask other questions in the comments below. I'll be here.

Payroll

Hi LC99,

Yes, you can easily handle this situation in QuickBooks Online (QBO) Payroll by setting up the $6/hour BC ECE wage enhancement as a separate earning type. This will allow you to add the supplement to the employee's paycheck independently of their regular salary, making it easier to track and adjust if the supplement ends in the future. Here’s how you can set it up:

Step-by-Step Guide to Add a Separate Earnings Type

  1. Go to Payroll Settings:

    • Click the Gear Icon in the upper-right corner.
    • Under the Your Company section, select Payroll Settings.
  2. Create a New Earnings Type:

    • Scroll down to the Earnings section.
    • Click Add New Type (or a similar option, depending on your version).
  3. Name the Earnings Type:

    • Give the new earning type a name like "ECE Wage Enhancement" or something descriptive to identify it easily.
    • Choose the type as Hourly.
  4. Set the Rate:

    • Enter the fixed rate of $6/hour.
  5. Assign the Earning Type to the Employee:

    • Go to the Employees section in the left navigation bar.
    • Click on the employee’s name to open their profile.
    • Under their compensation details, click Add Earnings.
    • Select the new earning type you just created and save your changes.
  6. Run Payroll:

    • When you run payroll, you’ll see the "ECE Wage Enhancement" listed as a separate earning line. The $6/hour will automatically calculate based on the hours worked.
  7. Review and Adjust as Needed:

    • If the wage enhancement ends or changes, you can simply remove or update this earning type in the employee profile.

This setup keeps the $6/hour wage enhancement clearly separate from the regular salary for reporting and tracking purposes. It also allows for easy adjustments if circumstances change.

Let me know if you need more help with this!

Best regards,
