reconciliation starting balance is wrong

One of my bank accounts has a negative beginning balance when I start a reconciliation. It does not match the gl, or the balance sheet - the beginning balance is zero. There are no transactions to validate this glitch but I can not complete the reconciliation without it posting an invalid reconciliation discrepancy.

reconciliation starting balance is wrong

Let's review the beginning balance in your account, Mandac.

The beginning balance reflects the account's total at the start of the review period. Confirming its accuracy and addressing any discrepancies is crucial. This balance should match the opening figure on your bank statement for the same date. Below are some common reasons for beginning balance issues:

  • Someone entered an incorrect opening balance when they created the account in QuickBooks.
  • Someone added transactions that are older than the opening balance, but didn't edit the original opening balance entry to reflect the change.
  • Someone edited, deleted, moved, or unreconciled an already reconciled transaction. This changes the ending balance of your last reconciliation, which impacts the beginning balance of the next one.
  • Someone manually reconciled a transaction, so it didn't show up on the next reconciliation.

You can refer to this link for instructions on reviewing discrepancy reports and for details on Step 4. On the other hand, if any changes have been made that impact your beginning balance, QuickBooks will notify you before you initiate the reconciliation process.

Also, if your account statement and QuickBooks transactions don’t align after reconciliation, this article provides steps to resolve the issue: Undo or remove transactions from reconciliations in QuickBooks Online.
