Reviewing uploaded receipts, out of no where the details started asking for tax amount and automatically adding the tax amount to the total. Is there a setting for this?

Yes, QuickBooks Online has a feature called "Sales Tax" that can automatically calculate and add tax amounts to transactions, including uploaded receipts. If you're seeing tax amounts being automatically added to the total on your receipts, it's likely that the Sales Tax feature has been enabled or configured for your account. Here's how you can manage this feature:

  1. Check Sales Tax Settings: Sales Tax settings can be configured in QuickBooks Online to automatically calculate and add tax amounts to transactions. To check these settings:

    a. Log in to your QuickBooks Online account. b. Go to the "Taxes" or "Sales Tax" section, usually located in the left navigation menu.

  2. Review Tax Rates and Agencies: In the Sales Tax section, review the tax rates and tax agencies that are set up. Make sure they accurately reflect the tax requirements for your business.

  3. Edit or Delete Tax Rates: If you want to adjust or remove tax rates from your transactions, you can edit or delete them from the Sales Tax settings.

  4. Check Transactions for Tax Amounts: If you're seeing tax amounts automatically added to uploaded receipts, it's possible that the system has identified the transactions as taxable based on your tax settings. Review the uploaded receipts and the tax amounts that have been added.

  5. Adjust Transaction Details: If you believe the tax amounts were added incorrectly, you can manually adjust the details of the transactions. Remove or edit the tax amounts as needed.

  6. Turn Off Tax Calculation: If you want to prevent QuickBooks Online from automatically calculating and adding tax amounts to transactions, you can consider turning off the tax calculation feature. Keep in mind that this might not be suitable if your business is required to collect and remit sales tax.

  7. Reach Out to Support: If you're having trouble with the Sales Tax feature or need assistance in configuring it to your requirements, you can contact QuickBooks Online support for guidance.

Remember that tax laws and regulations vary by location, and it's important to ensure that your tax settings in QuickBooks accurately reflect your business's tax obligations. If you're uncertain about making changes to tax settings, it's a good idea to consult with an accounting professional or tax advisor to ensure you're in compliance with local tax laws.

Hi there bluecollarbookke,

It's important that all your transactions are entered correctly for your books to be well balanced. QuickBooks Online is a great tool able to keep track of your expenses s you can see the profit of your business. I can provide some information about receipts.

Receipts entered using the camera function in the mobile app or other means imported through the receipts function should have the amount you enter inclusive of tax, and then you can adjust the tax amount as well. This modification would just remove from the expense itself, and not add more tax to the total of the transaction. If tax is being added to the total when entering receipts, I recommend reaching out to the QuickBooks Online support team outside of the Community. They'll be able to assist to make sure your receipts have the correct total. You can reach them using these steps:

Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat.
Social Media: Facebook and Twitter
