How can I run a report that shows us how much is paid by our customers by each payment type (ie, MC, Amex, cheque etc)?

Hello michele16,

Welcome to the community! I'm happy to help you with this so you can see the payment types included when you're running reports.

I know an important part of buisness is keeping track of which payment methods are used by your customers. There are certain reports in the program, such as the Sales by Customer Detal report, that'll allow you to add a Payment Method column. This shows you which method they used. There are two ways you can add this column: by clicking the Customize button on the report and choosing from the Columns section or by clicking the small gear icon at the top right of the report and checking off the appropriate box. Here's a screenshot of the second option.

There isn't a report that can be run by Payment Method, however, I have a solution for you. What you can do is run reports filtering for certain payment methods to see the totals you need. For instance, here's how you can do it with the report I mentioned earlier.

  1. Click the Customize button on the upper right of the report page.
  2. Click to expand the Filter section.
  3. Check off the Payment Method box.
  4. Choose a single payment method from the drop-down menu.
  5. Select Run report.

In doing this, you'll see the total number of sales for that payment type. While you don't need to use the Payment Method column since you've filtered for only a specific type, it may be useful to include to help you remember which type you chose. Repeat this process for each payment method. Here's another screenshot of what such a report might look like (note that I've blanked out the company and customer names; your report should have each of these present).

I hope that helps! Here are a few other articles I recommend keeping on hand about customizing and running reports in QuickBooks Online.

Have a great day!
