How do I change my Sales Tax Periods?

Hi @BigAussie

welcome to the community. We are more than happy to help out.

Filing your GST/HST is of upmost importance. Quickbooks makes filing them easy and simply.

If you've filed you taxes before, you can manually change the filing date and I'll show you how. To do this, click the Taxes tab on the left menu > Sales Tax > Prepare Return and adjust the dates accordingly. Based on what you've described, you may also want to take a look at your filing frequency and make sure it aligns with your business.

Note: Your filing frequency can differ between your federal and provincial return. Make sure you're editing the right filing frequency.

  1.     Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2.     Select Sales Tax at the top.
  3.     Click on Manage Sales.
  4.     On that page, click the drop-down arrow beside Add Rate.
  5.     Select Edit Agency Settings.

Try the steps above and let me know how you make out.

How do I change my Sales Tax Periods?

Hello BigAussie,

I know how much of a difference to your accounting even something as simple as your sales tax filing period can make. I want to make sure you have the right direction for how to handle this in QuickBooks Desktop, and I'm here to help.

I'd like to start by noting that the steps shared so far are for QuickBooks Online, so if you've been trying them and wondering why you don't see those options, that's why. QuickBooks Desktop works a bit differently. It's still a fairly simple process, the steps just look different. I can guide you through this. To change your sales tax period, follow these steps.

  1. Select the Sales Tax menu in the top bar.
  2. Choose Manage Sales Tax.
  3. Double click the agency in question to open the setup. (Note: Sales tax agencies are set up as vendors, so this will open the Edit Vendor window.)
  4. Choose the Sales Tax Settings tab.
  5. Edit the Reporting Period and Period Ending fields as desired.
  6. Click OK to save.

You can repeat these steps with each sales tax agency as needed, then you'll be able to move forward with the correct periods. To learn more about working with sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop, check out this link: Set up sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop

That should get you on track, but I'm here if you have questions. Don't hesitate to come back to this thread with a reply.

Enjoy your day!

How do I change my Sales Tax Periods?

I have looked carefully and there is not a manage sales tax dropdown.  Please help.  It was set up as filing quarterly and we have to file monthly in Arizona.

On your top icon bar, select the Company tab>Company Information. Towards the bottom left corner, in the Report Information section, change the First Month of your Tax year as needed. It can be different from the Fiscal Year, but generally it is the same.
