Hi alexis-bubbblegr,

It's nice to see you in Community.  Welcome!  Setting up an asset account in QuickBooks Online can be done in just a few steps.  I'd be glad to assist!

Here's how to add an asset account in your chart of accounts;

1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Chart of Accounts

2. Open New

3. From the Account Type ▼ dropdown, select Property, plant and equipment

4. Select the option that closely describes the asset from the Detail Type ▼ dropdown menu

5. Give the account a Name, then select the Track depreciation of this asset checkbox

6. Enter the current value of your asset in the Original cost field and the As of date (If recording the loan, leave this blank)

7. When you're done, hit Save and Close.

You're all set!

Please don't hesitate to come back to Community, if you have any other questions.  We'd love to help!

I am having the same issue. When I click "New" under Chart of Accounts to add an account, account type is greyed out and I can't save. Can you please suggest a fix? I'm trying to add my company equipment to fixed assets. Thank you.

We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention, krisnabest. A possible reason for this could be a data problem within your system. I’m here to provide insight on how to isolate and resolve the issue.

Stored web caches can sometimes become corrupted, damaged, or outdated, leading to unusual appearances or behaviors on websites. To address this issue, we can start by accessing your customer's account in a private browsing window, since this mode disregards data from cached files. Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Note that you'll press the Keys all together, and a pop-up window will show that would be the private browser.

If the account type is no longer grayed out, you can return to your regular browser and clear its cache. This action will eliminate outdated or corrupted internet files that may be causing browsing issues. Alternatively, you may consider using other supported browsers.

If your chart of accounts becomes large, there's no need to worry. You can keep your accounts organized and easy to find by assigning numbers to them.
