How do I add partial payments to an invoice? I had a client pay half in cash and the other half would be as an etransfer

Hi there westwindequinema,

Having the option to record a partial payment against an invoice is an important feature, and I want to make sure you know how you're able to do that. Using QuickBooks Self-Employed you'll have the option to mark an invoice as paid, however using QuickBooks Online allows you to do this with ease.

As I mentioned, QuickBooks Self-Employed only provides the option to mark an open invoice as paid, so you'll be unable to record a partial payment this way. What you'll need to do is manually keep track of the partial payments until the invoice has been paid in full, then select the option to Mark as paid. If having the ability to record partial payments is essential for your business, I'd recommend making the Switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online. Once you've made the switch, recording a partial payment is easy. Here are the steps:

  1. Use the + New button to Receive Payment towards an open invoice.
  2. Choose the appropriate customer and fill in the required fields.
  3. Select the applicable invoice within the Outstanding Transactions section.
  4. In the Amount received field, enter the amount that you've received at that point.
  5. Hit Save and close to save your changes and record the partial payment. The invoice will show as Partially Paid from the Sales tab.

If you'd prefer to stick with QuickBooks Self-Employed but would like to see this feature added as an option, submitting feedback is a great way to have your voice heard. Simply navigate to the Assistant, then type and enter "feedback" and follow the prompts to share your thoughts with our product development team.
