Hello milltownyacht,
Let’s address your concern about creating work orders in QuickBooks.
At this time, the Work Order feature is not available in QuickBooks Online. As a workaround, you can use Delayed Charge. These are non-posting transactions that look similar to work orders and invoices.
Here's how:
I've also shared screenshots below to guide you.

PLEASE ADD THIS FEATURE!!! THE DELAYED CHARGE IS TERRIBLE, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T PRINT IT OUT NOR DOES IT CONTAIN CUSTOMERS INFORMATION IN ORDER TO PRINT AND GIVE TO TECHNICIAN TO TAKE CARE OF THE "WORK ORDER". DELAYED CHARGE WOULD BE PERFECT WITH A FEW TWEAKS!
I can appreciate that a Work Order is what you're looking for, rather than a Delayed Charge. I'm going to pass along your feedback to the engineering team for review. We're always searching for ways to improve the software and make QuickBooks Online better. Thanks for your suggestions.
I agree. A WORKORDER feature is desperately needed.
The delayed charge does not work.
At least let me remove the SUBTOTAL and TOTAL from an estimate.
Please hurry. I was sold on Quickbooks online. But this program is unuseable without a being able to print a workorder.
Hi there,
I know how important this feature is to you. My colleague Addie has already sent your feedback to our engineers. If you have any more suggestions, feel free to share. New product ideas and improvements are largely based on the feedback we get from you.
We're in the same boat. Our business desperately needs to be able to print work orders from estimates. We prefer to not have pricing on them as this is unnecessary for our technicians. They only need to know the customer, location, and what they are going there to do, and the quantity. Pricing is handled by sales and invoicing. I realize that others may need pricing and such on their WO's. Please add this feature to QBO ASAP and allow us to separately toggle pricing information on or offf in the WO as we wish. Thanks.
No worries. I'll make sure your feedback gets to the right hands. Reach out if you need anything.
Hi
Has there been any update about creating a work order module within QBO?
I am in desperate need of the function as explained by the guys above.
Regards Nick
Hey there, Nick. I appreciate the follow-up.
At this time, I can't really give you an estimated time-frame as to when this option will be added. Rest assured that we're looking into the request submitted by my colleague above.
You can visit the QuickBooks Blog site from time to time to see new updates. Who knows, one of them includes the option to enter a work order in QBO. Also, please keep an eye out on your email and in QBO as we send updates there too.
Until then, we'll keep sharing your suggestions to our developers to have them evaluated for future enhancements. Don't hesitate to leave another reply if you need help with anything else. Have a good day.
When will work orders be available? QBO does not work for me without it.
We really need this feature! I'm in the same boat as you guys.
I just created a username just to post on this thread to express the importance of a Work Order feature. Please implement this! Thanks!
WE ALSO NEED THIS FEATURE!!! I'M SICK OF QBO SAYING, "We'll pass the information to development, blah blah blah" and then NOTHING EVER HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless I'm missing the instructions how to do a work as requested for months and months, this is NOT SOLVED!
In May 2019 you were going to get the work order request to the "right people" . It's October! One of two things must have happened. Either you never passed it to "the right people", or whoever you gave it to misled you into thinking they were "the right people". Work orders needs to happen ASAP, like back in June or July since something was allegedly being done to implement this feature.
Hi There,
Have any options or pilots been released to allow "work orders" to be created? We also desperately need to be able to create them for our technicians with out revealing our pricing...I have found and created my own work around but they are cumbersome and time consuming....we would also like to be able to create a packing slip from either an estimate or work order WITHOUT having to create an invoice first...our customer do not appreciate us billing them before they receive their goods and remembering to go back and send the invoice or undo the invoicing is another cumbersome task. Unfortunately if this is offered soon we will have to look at other options all together outside of QuickBooks and I would really prefer not to have that hassle.
This is so fundamental for work flows - as it enables one to create a base Sales Order with an assigned Job Number - which could / should enable one to create multiple Estimates (based on the same job number). In this way, one could actually run a Sales Forecast -- which is also FUNDAMENTAL. While you're at it, please update your very funky email solution. We are looking at getting rid of QBO and moving up the ladder to a tool that can work for us.
Hi Dave_3032,
I appreciate you taking the time to send us your comments about this. I understand how important this feature is for you. Our main goal is to develop a product that allows you to focus on running your business, and your feedback plays an important role in shaping that. Currently we don't have a time frame for this feature to be added, but we are aware of how crucial work orders are for many of our customers. I'll be forwarding your comments, but you can increase the visibility of your feedback by sending it directly to our product development team. Here's an article with the steps: How do I submit feedback?
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other concerns.
This is very disturbing! We had to wait for a long time for our Quickbooks Desktop data to be converted for use with Quickbooks Online only to now find that the online version does not support Work Orders?!! The sales rep we spoke to at Quickbooks knew we were a manufacturing business and said there was no reason that Quickbooks online would not do what we needed. This software is a huge disruption to all the procedures and systems we have in place without Work Orders and had we known we certainly would not have chosen to transition to the online version without it. If trying to get work done during a skeleton staff during a virus outbreak isn't hard enough this deficient software is causing an unbelievable amount of stress. Please train your sales staff to list all the missing features from the online version when trying to "upgrade" people from the desktop version. I'm not sure if you outsource this work and therefore have less control on delivery dates but it appears people have been demanding this for a while with no results beyond "maybe you could put that suggestion in our suggestions box". Take some of the money you're spending on all of your TV commercials and put it where it is needed please!!
Jamie,
We are similar. Folks at Intuit. Wake up! This is so fundamental. Who is in charge? Please have him or her respond. Where is some accountability and transparency? Folks are needing help -- and your company hosts huge events, training sessions -- but, somehow has missed a key part of the sales / billing cycle.
Step Up please and quit sending these stupid replys to folks. Folks have been requesting this for over two years. This is FUNDAMENTAL to sales forecasting, inventory forecasting, etc. : /.
Intuit team you're at home working. Figure this sx&?t out and communicate with us "customers".
Is there an update in the work order being added this is a feature that is much needed by many accountants and my customers. It simply causes me more work and can be confusing to the recipient PLEASE ADD
I am in the same boat. Recently was sold into moving to QBO and was told i was going to be able to run my business the same way if not better as I would with the desktop version. THAT IS NOT THE CASE! I cant make work orders / cant make invoices pending. After reading this thread its obvious that QBO needs to handle business and fix the issue. Very disappointed with QBO so far and its not making things easier by any mean. Writing up pending invoices and sending my repair tech with that pending invoice made life easy. I could finalize the invoice with or without changes after my repair tech was finished with the job. Had all my customer information ready to go with what needed to be done right on the pending invoice. Job gets finshed... then boom make it final.... Print and send. QBO needs to figure it out.
Are you kidding me!?!? My company has been working for MONTHS to convert from QuickBooks Desktop to QBO because we were led to believe that all of the features we needed were in QBO and were better than QBD. Now I am learning that Work Orders don't exist in QBO. How in the world is a company supposed to function without Work Orders? I am frustrated and disappointed. Intuit...do your job and make QBO live up to the promises you made!
Quickbooks employees - WHEN WILL THIS FEATURE BE AVAILABLE?
Sincerely,
Impatient clients who will switch to another program if it's not implemented soon.
