Hello,
A packing slip is a document that contains item, quantity, and other important shipping information when shipping goods to your customers. QuickBooks Online makes it simple to create these packing slips, and I'd be happy to explain the limitations that are involved in the formatting.
To create a packing slip in QuickBooks Online, follow these steps:
1. From the left menu, select Sales then choose Customers.
2. Select the customer's name to display a list of their transactions.
3. From the Transaction List tab, select the box next to each invoice or sales receipt for which you want to print a Packing Slip.
4. Select the Batch actions drop-down, then choose Print packing slip.
5. The print preview screen will open so you can select printing options, preview, and print.
While you're able to customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts, packing slips have one standard format. I know it would be beneficial for your business to have the option to add the SKU field on your packing slip. A good workaround for this would be to add the SKU to your product/service name when you create your inventory or service item. You can edit your product/service by clicking the Sales tab, then click Products and Services. Select Edit next to the item you're selling, and add the SKU next to the name.
I'd also recommend submitting feedback about this to our product development team. We're constantly innovating, and improving our products to fit your needs.
I hope this helps clear things up for you.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Honestly, I find it baffling that you know that a "A packing slip is a document that contains item, quantity, and other important shipping information when shipping goods" but does not consider a SKU to be important information.
How can the people of a warehouse easily locate a product for packing without the SKU? The whole point of having an SKU is to make it easier to locate a product, and to avoid mistakes with products that have similar names.
It is almost the same as saying that you cannot add the price of individual products to an invoice.
If the point of Quickbooks is to help manage the business, it is failing horribly.
Hi Thales1,
Thanks for joining us here. I know how important it is to easily track your products and services and have all the necessary information on your packing slip. QuickBooks Online is designed with several features you can take advantage of for your business needs. I'll be happy to share more options on how you can include the SKU on a packing slip.
When setting up a product or service in the system, you can enter a SKU in the SKU field. To review how to add products and services in QuickBooks Online, here's an article: Add product and service items to QuickBooks Online
If you use QuickBooks Online Essentials or Plus, you can also add a custom field on your sales forms for SKU, which will then show up on your packing slips. Here's how to do that.
When adding a product and service on an invoice or sales receipt, you'll be able to see the SKU information previously added in the product and services' set-up. You can then use that information to fill in your SKU custom field, and follow the steps shared above by Addie to print a packing slip. This is one way to help you view the SKU on your slip.
To learn more about customizing sales forms, here's an article: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online
Another way to display the SKU on a packing slip for every QBO plan is to simply include the SKU in the Description field when creating your invoice or sales receipt.
I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to stop by if you have other questions.
I really don't understand why it is so difficult to add sku to the invoices. For one, it can only be done in the airy template. And it only part way works for airy classic. Don't even try with airy new.
Also, when you do change the columns to accommodate the sku, it prints far to the right and chops off the sku number.
Additionally, this field does not print in the packing slip mode. WHICH IS RIDICULOUS! We have over 500 parts with similar sounding names and I'm supposed to trust someone in shipping to guess at the right one without the sku? Why even have a sku if you make it so difficult to use it!!!
Now the work around is to add sku to description. So I now have to spend hours/days editing 500+ part numbers to add the sku to description ?
If I had known QB online was so user unfriendly I would have researched different programs.
This is a FAIL, QB!
I agree with Thales1 and others: not being able to print SKU on the packing list in nonsense.
I don't understand why QB allows to modify and create custom templates for invoices, but not for packing lists? For one, your default (and the only available) template looks ugly. Not to mention its useless without SKU-s.
Please fix it, Quickbooks Team!!! It's not so difficult!
Hello sergey_m,
I hear what you're saying about the difference this field could make on your forms. I want to assure you that our goal here at QuickBooks is to provide users with the tools to keep their bookkeeping easy while giving the option for other features like inventory tracking, including SKUs. The product development team is constantly on the go with enhancing and adding new features to the product, and there's a way for you to help with that.
Since what's been described here isn't meeting what you're looking for, I recommend leaving the product development team feedback. I see my colleague mentioned it, but didn't leave the steps. Luckily, it's an easy process, outlined in the How do I submit feedback? Community article. The development team considers the comments left here when looking into the next new thing for the program, so it's a great way to have your voice heard.
In the meantime, the workaround suggested in the first response of adding the SKU to the product description is something to consider, as are partner apps through the Apps tab. There, you might find an inventory management app that better suits your needs while still keeping things simple by filtering your the information into QuickBooks Online.
Have a great rest of your day!
Thanks for response Laura.
It's not just the SKU-s, it's general impossibility to modify packing list template to my needs and requirements that bothers me and I'm sure others too.
I already left feedback through the app multiple times, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere. There are threads with similar discussions from 2 years ago. Your colleagues always assure us-customers that QB works hard to enhance the product; and encourage to provide feedback, which I believe many customers do.
Meanwhile, problem doesn't get solved, only the subscription fee gets increased.
So I'm very sorry but words of support and encouragement don't help with real problems. They actually need to be fixed.
Best Regards
Being able to modify certain things, such as packing slips, just as you'd like them is important and when a program can't do what you're looking for, I know it can be difficult to work with. As an accounting software, QuickBooks Online doesn't always have enhanced capabilities for other business tasks. We do our best to provide other options just outside of the bookkeeping realm, but in those instances where the program can't do what you're wanting, I always encourage users to explore other ways to meet those needs and make the best decision for their businesses.
LauraAB,
That response is a joke. Keep passing the buck!
Wow, what a tone deaf response to an urgent problem for many users.
Packing slips are essential for B2B companies that sell products. If the shipped products cannot be reconciled against ordered line items at the customer's receiving dock, our invoice sent to to the customer's A/P department will languish in the goods to be received pile.
The pathetic packing slip 'feature' in QBO is a huge deficiency that needs to be corrected ASAP. If you needs requirements for what to improve, ask me or any of the other actual users, better yet ask those who have abandoned QBO for the lack of this capability.
Hi daviddmoscheila. Your feedback is valuable and it's important your voice is heard. New product features and enhancements are largely based on the feedback we get from users like you. I recommend sending feedback directly to our engineers by clicking the Gear icon and looking for Feedback. Let me know if you have questions, I'm here to help.

How can a packing list not be customizable? We absolutely need the ability to have the sku in there, remove the description to make the packing list easy, add a checkbox, etc. This is INSANE a product this robust in terms of invoicing does not have simple features to be able to make a simplified pick-list style packing list for warehouse workers.
100% CORRECT. THIS NEEDS ADDRESSED

Hi grannas. Thanks for connecting with us here. I can see the importance of being able to customize your packing slip. Since this feature isn't available yet, I encourage you to send feedback to our engineers by clicking the Gear icon and looking for Feedback. I'm here in case you have other questions, I'm here to help.
This solution doesn't work for me. On my packing slip, only the description shows, and qty. None of the other columns show, so adding the SKU in the product name doesn't work because that column doesn't even show up.
Hi ProCraft,
I see where you're coming from, and many great ideas are shared through the feedback option suggested above. I invite you to add your input to the other users that have asked for this option to be made available.
The product development team considers all the feedback submitted when considering future updates. I know this doesn't provide you with the features you need in the present. You can check the apps which were suggested above as well. Within your QuickBooks product, a workaround would be to include your SKU in your description; though not ideal, it'll provide you with the packing slip you need.
If you have any other questions, please let me know. Have a great day!
Customers: "YOUR PACKING LIST IS JUST A INVOICE WITHOUT PRICING. No SKU's for picking, It includes the full product names and descriptions. Even the indenting doesn't work on a bundle. It is so hard to read. Make it customizable so we can make it work for us"
Quickbooks: "Just add a SKU to your product name"
Customers: "FACE PALM. This is like, basic functionality stuff here.."
I need to add a comment “Ship To”, a Comment saying “Received By” and a Signature Area to the packing slip. Also all remove all costs and pricing should be removed as I use a third party delivery company to ship my goods.
How can I achieve this?
Is your question addressing to me? If you are interested to explore the app, send your business email address in a private message to us. We will introduce you directly to the app developer.
Yeah, how do I add the "ship to" address!? Seems crazy that I have to send this to my warehouse but I can't add the ship to address. HELP!
So when I follow your instructions - it creates a document that says "INVOICE" - not "PACKING SLIP". This is a problem. How do we get it say "PACKING SLIP"?
by using a 3rd party app
quickbooks is not smart enough to have a packing list apparently...
Seems like this should be updated by QB - if we can show the sku's on the invoice, it should be an option for the packing slip where it is essential.
