How to post against the GST GL account? 1) I have an arrears payment to post. The amount is still in the GST GL. 2) How do I post Installments into the GST GL?

Hi, Speth

For the first instalment move to Taxes > Filings > Prepare the return, File and Record payment

For additional instalments use the Cheque/Expense screen and select the GST/HST Suspense account as the category.

Feel free to contact me for any clarifications.

Hello Speth,

I appreciate that you've taken a moment to shed some light on your situation and what you need to record in QuickBooks Online. It's important to me that you have the information you need for working with sales tax in the program, and I'm here to help by going over that.

When working with sales tax in QuickBooks Online, the best way to ensure that your calculations, payments, and filings are recorded accurately is by using the features in and related to the sales tax module. In this case, it means using the sales tax codes created in the module and the features within the module, such as the instilments feature.

You can find the option to create an instalment by selecting the New drop-down menu on the right-hand side of the Sales tax page through the Taxes menu. Select Instalment and then enter the date, account, and amount information as needed. After saving, the program will create an entry in your sales tax suspense account and you'll see the figure reflected in the calculations for the sales tax filing period the instalment applies to. When you file for that period, you should see the instalment accounted for amount the breakdown. Once you've recorded the payment or refund for that filing, the suspense account should then zero out that amount.

While you can use other transactions to post to sales tax accounts like Rajanikanth has suggested, these may not appear properly in the sales tax module and therefore negatively impact your calculations for filing. If you're going to use alternative methods such as expense transactions or even journal entries, I strongly suggest working with and accountant to make sure that these will properly impact your books. The My Accountant tab in QuickBooks Online is designed so you can work with an accountant right in the program. There, you can invite your accountant as a user or take advantage of the Find a pro to help button to see our directory of QuickBooks-certified accountants near you.

I hope this has helped with getting to know the options for recording your instalments. Don't hesitate if you have more questions about the features in QuickBooks Online!
