unassigned transactions for sales taxes

I upgraded from a 2013 Quickbooks desktop  to Premier desktop 2021.   First time using the new  program to do our sales taxes (GST/HST/QST  from Oct 01-Dec.31).  I have encountered a problem that I cannot seem to figure out.  The taxes are due at the end of the month. There is a large amount of "unassigned transactions" that seem to be messing with the report. When clicking on the "unassigned transactions"  nothing happens, doesn't take you anywhere. Is this problem stemming from the upgrade?  Something overlooked, not done? Thanks for any help or advice.

unassigned transactions for sales taxes

Hi 1075826519.

Verifying your sales tax amounts are correct is imperative to make sure you're filing the right information to the CRA. I'd be happy to help you with getting this corrected.

There can be many reasons why large amounts of unassigned sales tax transactions are showing up in your filing. The first thing to try would be to check for any kind of data damage in the company file. To do this you'll first need to run a verify and rebuild by following these steps:

First run the Rebuild to fix any issues:

  1. From the QuickBooks Utilities menu, choose Rebuild Data.
  2. Select OK if you receive a prompt to back up your company file.
Note: Your computer may display the message QuickBooks is not responding. However, as long as you can see your mouse cursor move, Rebuild is still ongoing. Wait for it to complete.
  3. Select OK when you get the message Rebuild has completed and proceed with the next step.

Once you finish running Rebuild you'll need to then run Verify to see if there are more issues to correct:

  1. Under QuickBooks File menu, select Utilities, then choose Verify Data.
  2. Select OK when you see the message QuickBooks detected no problem with your data. You may continue using your company file.
  3. If Verify finds an issue with your data, you will be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors. Select Rebuild Now.

You may need to run these steps a few times until you get a message that no issues were found or fixed.

If you still have issues with your sales tax filing it could be due to transactions not having sales tax assigned or other issues with the invoices and bills. I recommend contacting your accountant as they can help you look over and find any transactions that could be causing issues. If you don't have an accountant no worries, we can help. You can go to our Find an Accountant page to find one in your area to help.

If you have any questions let us know and we'd be happy to help.

Thank you for your reply and advice.

As it turned out,  some bills did not have sales taxes assigned.  And what's more, these were entered as journal entries.

Thanks again for your advice.
