You can delete the payment if there are no associated deposits. If there's a transaction that has been deposited, you need to edit or remove it first, before deleting them.
Here's how:
- Click Sales, and select Customer.
- Locate the Payment.
- On the customer payment window, click More at the the bottom part.
- Then, click Delete.
Once done, create a Journal Entry to apply the payment on A/R account. You can check this article the detailed steps: Create a journal entry
Moving forward, you’ll need to use the receive payment option to pay the open invoice. You can either select Receive Payment within the invoice, or click the Plus icon.
