On my expense entries, how do I get QB to automatically calculate sales tax?

Hello,

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community page. I'll gladly help with tax calculations in your expenses. QuickBooks Online offers a solid platform where you can setup specific parameters to automate your entries. If you wish to have the system automatically calculate sales tax in your expenses, you need to assign a default tax code to your expense accounts. Here's how:

  1. Select Accounting from the left menu
  2. Select Chart of Accounts
  3. Select the expense account you wish to edit
  4. Select the triangle next to Run Report
  5. Select Edit from the drop down menu
  6. Select Edit
  7. Under Default Tax Code, select the sales tax you want to apply automatically
  8. Select Save and Close

Going forward, expenses created for this category will use the selected sales tax by default.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am having this issue, but I have already changed the default tax code to what I require for each expense account. But, when I add expense entries manually, it isn't populating any sales tax choice.

Hello veronicam1,

Thanks for reaching out on this thread. It's important to me that the features in QuickBooks Online are working properly, including things like your default sales tax codes attributed to accounts. I can help you get back on track with this.

When things don't seem to be working quite right in QuickBooks Online, one of the best first steps to take is clearing cache, trying a private browser, and using another browser type entirely. Because QuickBooks Online is a cloud platform, these kinds of steps ensure that something with the browser and connection to the cloud isn't causing the problem.

If those don't solve the problem, however, it'll be helpful for our support team to take a closer look at what's happening in your books to find a solution. There are a few ways to get in touch, and you can choose from one of the options below to do so.

Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right in QuickBooks Online > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat.

Social MediaFacebookTwitter, and Instagram.
Support hours are from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.

We've got your back.
