We have QuickBooks Pro (Canada), I have read all the docs many times over but can't seem to find a straight answer to this so I apologize if this is covered. I personally need to access Quickbooks on 2 different computers at my shop, We have gone through the procedures here:
My question is: do I need to have a 2 user license to operate QB's on both machines?
Yes. You need a license of QBD for 2 users to run in multi user mode.
Ok so to confirm I need 1 license for each workstations that has access to the file? In our circumstance it's 2 workstations so we'll need 2 licenses? We already have 1 license and just need to know if I have to purchase another one.
Make sure you purchased an additional seat for your current license. If you purchased another license with different code, you may end up asking to merge the license later.
Hi MK2George,
Making sure you can use QuickBooks Desktop on multiple computers is important in case something ever happens to one you always have the back up. I can go over how user license work and multi user aspects.
There's usually a bit of confusion on how user license work and how many computers you can install QuickBooks Desktop on so allow me to explain. A user license isn't how many computers you can install QuickBooks Desktop on but instead how many users can be logged in at once in a multi user set up. If you want to install QuickBooks on two computers and a server on a 1 user license you can, you just can't have more than one person logged in at a time. If you need to have two people accessing your company file at once then you will need a 2 user license.
If you do need to upgrade to a two user license you can give our support team a call and they would be happy to assist you with the upgrade. Their hours of operation and contact information is located here.
Hope that helped explain how user licenses work.
Nick thank YOU. That answers my question perfectly, I need to access the file at the same time on 2 different machines. I will call in and order a license.
With only 1 license, can two users use different QB company files simultaneously (and a 2-user license is only required if 2 users want to use the same QB company file simultaneously)? Or can QB not even be opened by user #2 if user #1 already has QB open on their workstation?
You are allowed installing a license of QBD for 1 user on 2 different machines as long as you are not running QB on both machines at the same time to open any company file.
