Hello EOBA,

As your business grows, you'll need the right tools and resources to support your growth. QuickBooks is the go-to program for business owners looking to get ahead with their work. I'll be happy to help share more information about upgrading from Self-Employed to QB Online.

QuickBooks Self-Employed and Online are two separate products which means there isn't a direct way to upgrade from one to the other. The good news is you can export your data from Self-Employed and import it to QuickBooks Online. From Sel-Employed, you can export your reports and transactions, and here's how:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Use the TypeAccount, and Time period ▼ dropdowns to sort the transactions.
  3. Select the Export icon. Note: Receipts aren't exported. You can download them from specific transactions. Or go to the Reports menu and download all of your receipts for specific tax years.

To download your reports from QBSE, follow the steps below:

  1. In QuickBooks Self-Employed, go to the Reports menu.
  2. Find the report you want to download.
  3. Select the time period or tax year from the dropdown.
  4. Select View or Download.
  5. Select the arrow icon ▼ and then the Print or Download.

Once you have your info ready, you can import it into QuickBooks Online. I encourage you to check out this article for more info on how to: Import data from other software into QuickBooks Online

Give these steps a try and if you have other questions, don't hesitate to send me a message in the comments below. I've got your back.

@EOBA

If you have to open a new QBO account, make sure to click the Buy button to get the discounted price for up to a few month. If you purchase from the Trial account, you have to pay the regular rate.

Hello @EOBA,

I'd like to take a moment to clarify some of what's been discussed here so you can have confidence in making the switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online. My colleague has started you off with some good information, and I have another resource that I'd like to highlight for you.

What he's mentioned is correct: QuickBooks Self-Employed and QuickBooks Online are two separate products in the QuickBooks family. In this case, it would mean that you're not upgrading, but rather changing from one to the other. There is a process that may be available to you that can help simply this change, which is highlighted in the following article: Switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online

This article gives a detailed overview of an in-product switch option that might be available to you, but if it's not, there's also a step-by-step section for making the switch manually. I encourage you to give that a read through to see what options you have.

As for what Fiat Lux mentioned, there are two ways to sign up for a QuickBooks Online subscription: to start with a 30-day free trial or to purchase right away with the discounted amount. The free trial is a great opportunity to see if QuickBooks Online is a good fit for you without committing to any payments. Trials also sometimes have an in-product discounted option to subscribe to a paid subscription at a reduced rate. If you'd like the guaranteed discount, however, you can choose the Buy Now option when looking at QuickBooks subscriptions.

I hope this has helped. Don't hesitate if you have further questions about changing from the Self-Employed version to Online. Have a great weekend!

Hi Alan200,

Thanks for reaching out here in the QuickBooks Community. It's always great to hear from new members. Upgrading from Simple Start to Essentials is quick and easy. Let me walk you through the steps.

To Upgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon.
  2. Choose Account and Settings/Company Settings.
  3. Select the Billing and Subscription tab.
  4. You'll see the box with your subscription type in it. In the box, there's also Upgrade your plan. Click the link and follow the prompts.

Once you've upgraded your plan, you should log out of your account. When you log back in you, have access to all the additional features. Entering bills and recording bill payments and multicurrency are two of the more prominent upgrades you gain.

If you have questions, reach out. I'm here to help. Have a good night!

@Alan200

You are allowed to upgrade your plan but the discounted rate is not applicable. You may open a new blank QBO account with the same email address and migrate data from your old account if required.
