I accidently reconciled a bank reconciliation using the wrong statement date (May instead of March). Can it be unreconciled?

Hi there,

Mistakes like these are common but don't worry, you've reached the right place for help. I'll be happy to steer you in the right direction.

The easiest way to undo a reconciliation is through an accountant. If you're not in contact with an accountant, I encourage you to search for one our site using this link: Find a ProAdvisor.

You can undo a reconciliation by manually editing each transaction from the register. Follow the steps below to see how you can do this:

   1. Select the Gear icon on the Toolbar.
   2. Under Your Company, select Chart of Accounts.
   3. Locate the appropriate account for the transaction.
   4. From the Action column, select Account History.
   5. Identify the transaction to edit.
   6. In the reconcile status column (indicated by a check mark), repeatedly select the top line of the transaction to change the status of the transaction.

Codes indicate the status of the transaction:
             - Cleared
             - Reconciled
Blank - Not cleared or reconciled

   7. Select Save.

For additional tips on how to avoid undoing a reconciliation, take a look at this article: Avoid undoing a reconciliation. To see a more in-depth explanation of how to manually undo a reconciliation without an accountant, check out this article: How to unreconcile a transaction or undo a reconciliation.

Let me know if you have other questions. I'm here to help.

It would appear that I put in the wrong statement date  year and then did a full year of reconcilations each with the wrong year on them. Will I have to undo all of thoses?

Hello JefferyGordon,

it's important that all your bank accounts have the correct transactions so your account balance can be accurate. QuickBooks Online gives you the option to reconcile your accounts so that you can make sure all correct transactions are included in your books. I can point you in the right direction for assistance with your reconciliation.

If a reconciliation has incorrect dates, the only way to change it would be to have an accountant undo the reconciliations back to the incorrect ones. This can be done by an accountant user by using these steps. If you'd like to invite your accountant to QuickBooks to accomplish this, you can do so by going to the My accountant tab. You can also find an accountant that has experience using QuickBooks by clicking on the Find a pro to help option found in that section.
